Extracurricular Coaching Position Position Summary Somonauk High School is seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable, and student-centered Head Varsity Wrestling Coach to lead and develop a comprehensive wrestling program at the Freshman, JV, and Varsity levels. The Head Coach will establish a strong program identity, develop student-athletes both on and off the mat, and foster a culture centered on discipline, sportsmanship, academic achievement, teamwork, and competitive excellence . The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, organizational, communication, and technical coaching skills and will work collaboratively with the Athletic Director, coaching staff, student-athletes, families, and the school community. Program Leadership & Strategy Establish and communicate a clear wrestling philosophy for the entire program. Develop a consistent program structure that promotes skill development and continuity from the developmental levels through Varsity. Oversee all aspects of match-day management, including opponent scouting, preparation, lineup decisions, match plans, and real-time tactical adjustments. Develop strategies that maximize individual and team performance while adapting to opponents and competitive circumstances. Design and implement high-intensity, purposeful practices focused on individual technique, conditioning, match preparation, and team chemistry. Establish clear expectations for student-athlete behavior, attendance, effort, sportsmanship, and commitment to the program. Player Development & Mentorship Serve as a positive role model and mentor, emphasizing sportsmanship, discipline, personal responsibility, leadership, and academic excellence. Provide individualized instruction and feedback to help student-athletes develop technically, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Establish measurable goals for individual and team development throughout the season. Organize and lead appropriate off-season opportunities, including summer leagues, open mats/gyms, camps, clinics, and strength and conditioning programs. Coordinate and promote appropriate weight-room conditioning and athletic development opportunities. Support student-athletes interested in competing at the collegiate level by serving as a liaison with college wrestling programs and coaches. Maintain current and organized film and other appropriate materials to assist student-athletes with college recruitment. Encourage student-athletes to pursue postsecondary educational and athletic opportunities. Administrative & Operational Responsibilities Develop and manage the wrestling program budget, including equipment, uniforms, supplies, tournament expenses, and travel. Monitor equipment inventory and ensure appropriate maintenance, distribution, and replacement of wrestling equipment. Work collaboratively with the Athletic Director to develop and finalize the season schedule, tournaments, transportation, and other logistical needs. Coordinate effectively with school administration, the Athletic Director, coaching staff, officials, families, and opposing schools. Ensure all student-athletes meet applicable IHSA and Somonauk High School eligibility requirements, including academic eligibility, physical examinations, and other required participation documentation. Maintain accurate records related to participation, eligibility, equipment, schedules, and other program responsibilities. Ensure that all program activities comply with IHSA regulations, school district policies, and established athletic department procedures. Attend required coaches' meetings, professional development, athletic department meetings, and other school-sponsored activities. Communicate effectively and professionally with parents/guardians regarding program expectations, student-athlete development, schedules, and concerns. Desired Qualifications Previous wrestling coaching experience, preferably at the high school level. Demonstrated knowledge of wrestling technique, strategy, conditioning, and athlete development. Experience leading or coordinating a wrestling program is preferred. Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills. Commitment to developing student-athletes as students, competitors, and members of the school community. Ability to establish positive relationships with student-athletes, coaches, families, and community members. Commitment to academic achievement, sportsmanship, character development, and a positive team culture. Ability to meet all required IHSA and school district coaching requirements. The Head Varsity Wrestling Coach should be highly organized, competitive, collaborative, and committed to creating an environment where student-athletes are challenged to improve while understanding the importance of academics, character, teamwork, and accountability.
