Stetson University English Department seeks a literature specialist for a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor of English in Global Modernism to begin August 2027. Areas of specialization should include British and American literatures, with the ability to teach African American, Caribbean, Latino/a, or Postcolonial literatures as well as their intersections. Desirable secondary fields include but are not limited to gender and sexuality studies, race and literature, and literature and science.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. in English or Literature by August 2027, with expertise in British and American literatures with the ability to teach African American, Caribbean, Latino/a, or Postcolonial literatures as well as their intersections, an active scholarly agenda, and demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates in both general and specialized areas in English. We seek a teacher-scholar devoted to undergraduate teaching with the ability to teach first-year seminars, introductory and advanced English courses, and mentor student research while pursuing a rigorous scholarly agenda.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The annual teaching load includes five regular courses and one student-centered immersive experience (equivalent to one course) as a part of the University's experiential, contemporary, and integrative learning initiative - Hatter Ready. Teaching responsibilities include historical surveys from 1900-present, period courses in Modernism, one or more close reading and literary methods courses, a course in literary theory, and mentored-student research tutorials. Other courses will be based on the candidate's expertise and may include offerings for the University's requirements in General Education, including courses for Historical Inquiry, Creative Arts, or Culture and Beliefs requirements, First Year Seminars, and Junior Seminars. Other responsibilities include student academic advising as well as departmental and university service. THE DEPARTMENT
The English department is a vital community of undergraduate and graduate student and faculty that supports the English major and minor, the Creative Writing Minor, and the MFA program. The department also serves as a key contributor to several of Stetson's interdisciplinary programs, such as Africana Studies, Medical and Health Humanities, Gender Studies, Pre-Law, and the University Writing Program. THE COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES
Stetson's College of Arts and Sciences ( https://www.stetson.edu/artsci/ ) is the largest and most diverse of the University's colleges and schools; it includes the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, education, and creative arts. DeLand is a picturesque residential community of 38,000 located 20 miles west of Daytona Beach and 35 miles northeast of Orlando. The area offers extensive cultural as well as recreational activities.
