Job Summary The Department of Social Sciences at the University of Texas at Tyler is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Anthropology to teach Anthropology courses in the Social Sciences major to begin August 16, 2027. Duties include teaching a 3/3 course load, an active program of field-based archaeological research, and service to the university and local community. The Department of Social Sciences incorporates Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Economics, Geography, Social Work, Sociology, and Public Administration. Anthropology is part of the interdisciplinary Social Sciences major, a Bachelor of Science degree program that integrates coursework in Anthropology, Geography, and Sociology. Key Responsibilities Teach undergraduate courses in anthropology. Maintain an active program of research. Develop and offer a field school in the region that provides students with hands-on training. Mentor and advise students in academic and professional development. Contribute to curriculum development and departmental service. Maintain regular on-campus presence. Attend departmental meetings. Required Qualifications PhD in Anthropology or related discipline from an accredited university (ABD is acceptable to apply but must have the degree awarded by August 16, 2027). Demonstrated potential for maintaining an active program of archaeological research. Ability or willingness to teach courses in multiple instructional modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and online formats, as needed. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently. Preferred Qualifications Active program of archaeological field research. Willingness to teach a range of anthropology courses. Evidence of teaching in an accredited community college and/or university setting or similar experience. Demonstrated commitment to student-centered teaching and mentorship. Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies Ability to develop and maintain effective and constructive collaborative relationships with faculty and administration throughout the university. Record of professional activities related to anthropology and education. Additional Information The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code Section 51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information.
