A Curriculum Specialist works in a public school district to coordinate curriculum. Works with teachers to develop curriculum that helps students learn effectively and meets state educational standards. Analyzes student assessment data, and chooses textbooks, educational materials, and new technologies to support teaching. May specialize in particular grade levels or subject areas, or education for specific groups of students such as English Language Learners.
specialist provides support to students with print disabilities and literacy barriers. AKCAM is a statewide AEM contact, providing material, support, and training for stakeholders at the individual and district levels. This position reports to an SESA administrator.
Essential Functions:
1. Initiate and participate in various itinerant outreach activities within Alaska's 53 school districts to expand assigned stakeholders' knowledge and disseminate information about Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) and what a print disability is. 2. Observe and assess assigned students with print disabilities in educational settings for the purpose of connecting Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) and the appropriate formats (i.e., print, digital, graphic, audio, or video). 3. Research and determine appropriate tools, information, resources, and training needed to resolve technical and instructional accessibility barriers. 4. Create Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) and connect appropriate Assistive Technology (AT) that will meet the assessed needs of the student with a print disability accessing educational materials. 5. Provide itinerant consultative services to build the local capacity of the school district team to replicate the recommended format and resources that meet the needs of the student with print disability. 6. Complete student service, grant, and other reports within agency standards and agency-established timelines. 7. Accurately input required data into the SESA FileMaker Pro database to ensure timely agency compliance with the state of Alaska program audit requirements. 8. Maintain files and records (confidential and non-confidential), compiling pertinent information in assigned areas (e.g., IEP files, SESA referral documents, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the accuracy of materials and complying with all agency, federal, state, and district (when working on site) regulations. 9. Respond to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties (e.g., district staff, state and federal agencies, self-advocates, and community members) for the purpose of providing information that improves outcomes for students with print disabilities. 10. Provide special education instructional support and training, including evidence-based topical in-services and workshops to school personnel, parents, students, peers, and community members. 11. Facilitate interagency collaboration with relevant stakeholders. 12. Actively participates in agency in-house training and professional development. 13. Develop synchronous and asynchronous training materials to educate stakeholders on accessibility solutions to provide instructional content in the most accessible formats. 14. Perform other agency and/or program-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Master's degree in special education with an emphasis in assistive technology (AT), visual impairment/reading disabilities, or a bachelor's degree in special education and suitable experience. 2. Knowledge of current research and a range of educational practices in the field of teaching students with print disabilities. 3. Recent experience identifying and resolving accessibility barriers to provide accessible education materials, assistive technology, and curriculum for students with print disabilities. 4. Understand accessibility related standards and laws (WCAG 2.1, ADA Section 508, The Chafee Amendment of the US Copyright Act) that apply to educational practice. 5. Experience with distance technologies, accessibility standards, and digital learning. 6. Ability to travel independently in rural/remote Alaska throughout the school year. 7. Reliable, responsible educator. 8. Alaska State Department of Education Special Education Type A Teaching Certificate.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience assessing and producing accessible educational material that adheres to accessibility standards (ADA Title II, ADA Section 508, WCAG 2.1, Rehabilitation Act). 2. Experience with accessibility evaluation tools (Chrome, Adobe Acrobat, WAVE) for digital materials and content. 3. Experience in training various school staff members on the effective use of assistive technologies in different environments. 4. Experience operating assistive technologies (JAWS, NVDA, embossers, textbook conversion, speech recognition). 5. Strong project management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
Pay:
$67,798.00 - $81,686.00 per year
