Hiring Agency Justice & Public Safety Cabinet | Department of Corrections Location 4000 Morgan Road La Grange, KY 40031 USA Description At the Kentucky Department of Corrections, the Division of Education plays a crucial role supporting the Department and the reentry of offenders back into the community. The mission of the Division of Education is to prepare every offender through the advancement of academic achievement and work ready skills for successful reentry. As education corrections professionals, it is our job to assist in the rehabilitation and reentry of offenders by working within the Department, with community partners, and state agencies to increase community safety and reduce recidivism rates. The corrections education specialist will provide direct instruction in general education content areas (i.e., math, reading, science, social studies), and support in planning, facilitating, and coordinating educational opportunities to offenders within the correctional environment. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Provides targeted general education instruction (classroom and performance based) to students and/or adult inmates in a Correctional Setting, which includes promoting education during inmate orientation and to the general population. Maintains order and discipline in the classroom. Develops lesson plans on educational topics within assigned correctional facility; adheres to approved curriculum, expected outcomes and program requirements; and submits all transcripts and documents to the appropriate agencies for review and approval. Advises students as needed and assesses their attainment using reliable criteria. Maintains federal and state reports regarding student assessment and progress. Makes appropriate referrals when needed. Assists with coordinating special programs regarding educational needs and assessments within the Department. Enters daily attendance into the Kentucky Offender Management System (KOMS) and student information into the KY Adult Education Reporting System (KAERS). Maintains an accurate and complete inventory of all classroom equipment, tools, computers, and toxic-caustic supplies used within the classroom, and is responsible for monitoring student use of these items. Participates in professional development activities to improve teaching skills. Attend necessary educational staff meetings. Actively involved in continuing career development. Performs other assigned duties as required. The ideal candidate would possess experience in working with special education programming, strong verbal and written communication skills, organization skills, technology skills, and have displayed the ability to complete work related activities in a professional manner. The ideal candidate should be able to multitask with the ability to plan, pay attention to detail, think critically and analyze data to forecast positive outcomes. This candidate should possess the ability to work well in a team-oriented environment and adapt to the ever-changing needs of the Department, facility, and Division. Minimum Requirements

Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in education (academic).
