Position Summary:
St. Joseph's School for the Blind is seeking a qualified Curriculum Accessibility Specialist - Independent Contractor to support a grant-funded curriculum accessibility project. The contractor will adapt standard instructional materials into accessible formats, including large print, Braille-ready files, and audio-accessible versions, so that students who are blind or have low vision have equitable access to classroom instruction. The selected contractor will bring specialized expertise in the education of students who are blind or visually impaired and will collaborate with classroom teachers and instructional aides, review and edit adapted materials, and help establish sustainable workflows for ongoing curriculum accessibility.
Qualifications:
Current certification as a Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (TVI) (Required). Minimum of two (2) years of experience adapting instructional materials for students who are blind, have low vision, or have multiple disabilities. Bachelor's degree or higher (Required). Knowledge of Braille production, Braille-ready file creation, large print formatting, tactile graphics, and other accessible instructional formats. Familiarity with Duxbury Braille Translation Software or similar adaptive technology preferred. Background in education, special education, curriculum adaptation, or instructional accessibility. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with teachers, instructional staff, and administrators. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, student-centered instructional materials.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Adapt existing curriculum and instructional materials into accessible formats, including large print, Braille-ready files, tactile graphics, and audio-accessible versions. Use adaptive technology and related tools, including Braille translation software, to prepare materials for classroom use. Review and edit Braille and other adapted materials for accuracy, usability, and instructional appropriateness. Collaborate with teachers, teacher aides, and program leadership to prioritize materials and support effective implementation. Provide practical guidance to instructional staff on the use of adapted curriculum materials. Develop templates, workflows, and documentation to support sustainable curriculum accessibility practices beyond the grant period. Track progress toward project goals, including the number of curriculum units or materials adapted.
Monday to Friday, 25 hours a week, Flexible schedule based on project needs and mutually agreed-upon timelines.
Work Location:
