Instruction General Summary The Special Assistant to the Vice President for Instruction serves as a member of the Instructional Leadership Team and works directly with the Vice President for Instruction (VPI) to advance college-wide priorities related to instructional quality, teaching and learning, student learning, and continuous improvement. The Special Assistant extends the capacity of the VPI by coordinating high-priority instructional initiatives, supporting implementation across departments and programs, monitoring progress, and helping ensure that instructional priorities move from planning to meaningful practice. The position works collaboratively with instructional deans, department chairs and directors, faculty, Institutional Effectiveness, and other college partners to strengthen the quality and consistency of the student learning experience. Specific Position Duties Instructional Quality and Continuous Improvement Works directly with the VPI and Instructional Leadership Team to advance the College's instructional quality priorities. Coordinates implementation and continued development of the College's instructional quality framework. Supports college-wide efforts to strengthen the quality, consistency, engagement, and effectiveness of instruction across courses, programs, modalities, and instructional locations. Works with instructional leaders and faculty to translate college-wide expectations for quality instruction into meaningful practices at the department, program, and course levels. Coordinates instructional quality reviews, follow-up activities, and improvement efforts. Collects and analyzes information related to instructional quality and provides the VPI with updates on progress, trends, challenges, and areas needing additional attention. Supports faculty development and professional learning related to effective teaching, student learning, assessment, and instructional improvement. Student Learning Assessment and Academic Quality Supports college-wide efforts to strengthen assessment of student learning as a tool for instructional improvement. Works with faculty, instructional leaders, and Institutional Effectiveness to connect student learning outcomes, evidence of learning, instructional practices, and continuous improvement. Supports established assessment cycles, documentation, and follow-up. Assists instructional leaders and faculty in using assessment findings to identify and implement improvements to teaching and learning. Strategic Initiatives and Instructional Leadership Serves as the VPI's designee or project lead for selected instructional initiatives. Coordinates assigned projects from planning through implementation and evaluation. Brings together faculty, instructional leaders, and college partners to address priorities that cross departments, schools, programs, or divisions. Tracks key action items, deliverables, and progress associated with instructional initiatives. Develops reports, presentations, working documents, and other resources to support instructional decision-making. Researches emerging practices and issues related to teaching and learning, instructional quality, assessment, and academic improvement. Represents the Office of Instruction on committees, workgroups, and institutional initiatives as assigned. Facilitates meetings and planning sessions related to instructional quality and assigned priorities. Provides appropriate follow-through on decisions and initiatives of the Vice President for Instruction. Performs other related duties and special assignments as directed by the Vice President for Instruction. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Experience in teaching and learning, instructional leadership, faculty development, assessment, curriculum, or academic administration within higher education. Community college teaching or academic leadership experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The successful candidate should demonstrate: Strong understanding of effective teaching, student learning, assessment, and continuous improvement. Ability to build productive relationships with faculty and instructional leaders. Ability to translate institutional priorities into practical and sustainable instructional practices. Strong project management, facilitation, communication, and follow-through skills. Commitment to student learning, instructional excellence, academic integrity, and continuous improvement. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, academic leaders, and cross-functional teams. Ability to manage multiple initiatives, analyze information, move projects from planning through implementation, and exercise sound judgment, discretion, initiative, and independent problem-solving while working within priorities established by executive leadership. Familiarity with accreditation and academic requirements affecting higher education. Preferred Qualifications Doctoral degree in higher education, educational leadership, curriculum and instruction, or a related field. Experience coordinating college-wide instructional quality, teaching and learning, faculty development, assessment, or continuous improvement initiatives.
