The Sports & Rec Instructor leads structured classes, clinics, and/or leagues that promote skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The Instructor prepares lesson plans, reinforces safety and fair play, and helps ensure a positive, inclusive experience for participants and families in alignment with YMCA guidelines and Association policies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions with participants, families, staff, and volunteers. Leads safe, engaging sports and recreation instruction for assigned age groups and program formats (classes, clinics, leagues, or camps as applicable). Prepares lesson plans and activity progressions that build skills, confidence, teamwork, and sportsmanship; adapts instruction to varied abilities. Enforces program rules and behavior expectations consistently, supporting fair play and a respectful environment. Sets up, inspects, and breaks down equipment and instructional spaces; maintains cleanliness and readiness of the activity area and materials. Communicates clearly and professionally with parents/guardians and participants, addressing questions and concerns and escalating issues as needed. Observes participants for safety and proper technique; provides corrections, modifications, and positive coaching to reduce risk of injury. Responds quickly and effectively to accidents and incidents; completes required documentation within established timelines. Participates in staff meetings, trainings, open houses, and branch/Association events as assigned to support engagement and program quality. Follows YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols. Minimum one (1) year of experience teaching, coaching, or leading sports/recreation activities for varied age groups preferred. Demonstrated ability to provide instruction in a busy environment while maintaining safety, structure, and engagement. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with youth, adults, and diverse populations. Professional communication and basic organization skills (attendance, rosters, incident documentation, equipment checks). Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain within a designated onboarding period per Association practice).
