Responsibilities Safely operate school buses, transit buses, or paratransit vehicles according to traffic laws and transportation safety regulations. Ensure the safety of all passengers by adhering to passenger safety protocols, child behavior management policies, and emergency response procedures. Assist students with disabilities or mobility challenges by providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring proper securement during transit. Follow school policies regarding student discipline, behavior management, and communication with school staff when necessary. Conduct pre-trip inspections of the vehicle to verify operational safety, including checking vehicle codes, lights, brakes, and emergency equipment. Respond quickly to traffic changes or road hazards with defensive driving techniques to ensure timely arrivals. Maintain clear communication with dispatchers, school personnel, parents, and students using effective verbal skills in English or multilingual communication as needed. Complete all required documentation accurately, including trip logs, incident reports, and vehicle inspection records. Follow emergency stop procedures and emergency response procedures for transportation incidents to ensure passenger safety at all times. Perform heavy lifting when necessary for vehicle maintenance or securing equipment inside the bus. Experience Valid commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus or transit bus operation. Proven experience in bus driving, especially within school transportation or paratransit services. Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and state/local commercial driving laws. Experience working with children or in childcare settings is highly desirable. Familiarity with student discipline strategies and behavior management techniques. CPR certification and first aid training are preferred but not required; willingness to obtain certification upon hire is expected. Prior experience in emergency response procedures related to transportation is advantageous. Ability to communicate effectively in English; multilingual skills are a plus for serving diverse communities.
