QUALIFICATION:
This position requires knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; general needs and behavior of high school students; proper office methods and procedures including receptionist and telephone techniques, filing systems, maintenance and reporting functions; computer software necessary to complete assigned tasks. Must have the skills to learn specific procedures and operations and effectively apply them to work situations; type accurately at a minimum speed of 40 net wpm; operate standard office machines, computer terminals and designated audio-visual equipment; effectively and tactfully communicate both orally and in written forms; prepare and maintain a variety of accurate and complete records; learn and utilize District computer systems and local site computer systems/unit. Applicant must possess the ability to type letters and reports regarding credits, competency requirements and senior status; assist senior counselor in contacting local scholarship sources and in testing preparation an administration. Assist counselors and administration in handling attendance and minor discipline referrals through home contacts; credit checks and notification of students and parents on graduation status; certain types of student programming and programming changes; notification of parents of student shortages in units or on proficiency tests; new student registration and orientation; providing basic information on college requirements and related matters; evaluation of student career interests, aptitudes, objectives and choices; interpretation of District goals and objectives to students, parents and community; establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties. Completion of twelfth grade, preferably supplemented with some college level courses in counseling or guidance. Bilingual Preferred Two years of general clerical experience, preferably supplemented with some college-level courses in counseling/guidance of students.
A RECENT FIVE MINUTE TYPING CERTIFICATE MUST ACCOMPANY APPLICATION TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
Certificates must be less than two years old and cannot be completed through an online website. Kern High School District employees who currently work in a position requiring the same or higher minimum typing speed do not need to submit a typing certificate.
A CRIMINAL HISTORY CHECK WILL BE REQUIRED OF THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT. DUTIES OF POSITION
Assist counselors and administration in the performance of a variety of complex and responsible clerical duties in support of the day-to-day operations of the counseling/guidance service. Employees in the position receive general to limited supervision from the Head of Guidance within a broad framework of policies and procedures. This position performs a specialized support service within the guidance program and functions at a level of independence that requires a high degree of proficiency, initiative and demonstrably proven abilities.
