Job Description
Integrated within general job functions of a Staff Assistant, the position assigned to Veterans' Services is responsible for duties that are aligned with requirements set forth by the US Department of Veterans' Affairs. LCCC is considered an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) by the US Department of Veterans' Affairs, and is authorized to administer military service and dependent education benefits. This position will be designated as a School Certifying Official (SCO) for LCCC, and therefore will be required to complete and maintain annual training through the US Department of Veterans' Affairs. SCO-designated roles at institutions of higher learning are responsible for understanding educational benefits and eligibility requirements within the GI Bill and other veteran or military-connected education programs. An SCO works collaboratively with students, the Office of the Registrar, Student Accounts/ Bursar, and Financial Aid to verify individual enrollment eligibility and facilitate processes to support veteran, dependent, and military-connected students in accessing and maintaining their educational benefits. LCCC is a student-centered institution recognized nationally for exceptional and holistic student support and service. The Staff Assistant, Veteran Services, will contribute to a high quality service experience for students, their families, and the local community.
Position Summary:
Performs multiple office tasks that support the administrative functions of Veteran's Services based on the pre-established guidelines to meet internal and external requirements and expectations.Nature and scope:
Primary duties are generally limited to the type and function of Veterans' Services, but will interact often with other units to fulfill student and administrative needs. May have frequent contact with other offices requiring knowledge of college organization and procedures. Work is performed within pre-established guidelines for the assigned area. May work with other support employees. Typical duties include, but are not limited to the following: Performs receptionist duties; answers the telephone, greets students/visitors, sorts and distributes mail; Interacts effectively with others in areas of mutual concern; Produces communications, correspondence templates, forms, reports, articles, or related publication documents to support the functions of the Veterans' Services unit; Maintains office files such as cost, time or expense records; Uses administrative and office production software to access and produce college records; Assembles, organizes, and disseminates office information; Performs other related tasks as may be assigned; Performs annual objectives mutually determined with the supervisor or administrator including personal and professional growth plan. Principal accountabilities: Performs departmental support services with general direction and specific assignments with direct supervision; Understand and apply college and external policies to support work within the Veterans Services unit; Maintains files so that information is stored appropriately and in accordance with the college's records retention policy, and can be accessed promptly when needed; Schedules work assignments in accordance with the priorities of the office function; Maintains currency in essential skills and job knowledge.Problem solving:
Performs work within pre-established guidelines for administrative procedures and customer service; Disseminates information appropriately based on college policies and procedures within the organizational unit.Required Qualifications:
Must be a high school graduate or possess equivalent learning; Knowledge of the use of standard office equipment; Familiarity with general office policies and procedures; Ability to work effectively with people in a team environment; Ability to learn quickly; Ability to perform tasks within established guidelines; Keyboarding skills appropriate to the work assigned. (Specific keyboarding speed may be established by operating units depending upon need.); Must be oriented toward providing effective customer service.Preferred Qualifications :
Associate degree; Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet and database management software; Some experience in an office setting; Current or previous experience as a School Certifying Official (SCO) at a college or university, or experience working with veteran and military families outside of higher education (ie, healthcare, recruitment, employment, community resource access, etc).
