Clarkson University is New York State's highest-ranked small research institution. The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering hosts BS, MS, and PhD degrees in civil and environmental engineering, is Clarkson's second-largest department by enrollment, and leads in university-wide research activity. In recent years, CEE assistant professors have been awarded major early career grants, including two
NSF CAREER
awards and three NSF Engineering Research Initiation (ERI) awards. The six environmental engineering faculty generate approximately $4M/year in research expenditures from externally funded grants and contracts. The individual hired will have a similarly strong record of accomplishment securing external funding and mentoring graduate students commensurate of their rank. The person will contribute to the Department's educational mission through innovative and effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This individual will find opportunities within Clarkson's active research and education ecosystem. Examples of relevance to the position include, but are not limited to
Clarkson University's:
Center for Air & Aquatic Resources Engineering & Sciences (CAARES) , the analytical core of environmental research - home to state-of-the-art instrumentation and DoD ELAP-accredited PFAS analyses. Center of Excellence in Healthy Water Solutions (HWS) , which is co-led by Clarkson University and SUNY College of Environmental Science & Forestry (ESF) in New York State, mobilizes interdisciplinary research, industry partnerships, and community engagement to advance water quality, ecosystem resilience, and green manufacturing. With an annual economic impact of more than $8 million, the Center engages more than 60 faculty members to tackle emerging environmental challenges. Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) , one of 15 Centers for Advanced Technology (CAT) funded by New York State to encourage greater collaboration between private industry and universities in the development and application of new technologies. CAMP faculty are leaders in the development, characterization, and application of advanced materials and materials processing, including polymers, thin films, smart/responsive materials, plasma processing, water remediation technologies, composites, and particle/colloid science. Current partnerships range from large multinationals to small start-ups. Institute for a Sustainable Environment (ISE) , which drives campus-wide environmental and sustainability education, research, outreach, and sustainability efforts, and is an interdisciplinary hub for integrated education and research initiatives across Clarkson's schools and research centers. ISE hosts interdisciplinary BS, MS, and PhD programs in environmental science, engineering, and policy that incorporate natural and social sciences with a technology focus. At the ranks of associate or full professor, the individual hired would ideally provide leadership within one or more of these active research centers and contribute to shaping strategic directions in environmental research and education at Clarkson. Clarkson University's Potsdam, New York campus is located within the transition region between the St. Lawrence River Valley and the beautiful Adirondack Mountains. Clarkson's Wallace H. Coulter School of Engineering and Applied Sciences is a vibrant community of diverse teacher-scholars working toward the common goal of "Technology Serving Humanity". Clarkson is currently undergoing a major investment in the future with the recently-announced Ken '71 and Grace Solinsky Engineering Leadership Challenge focusing on advanced manufacturing. The Solinsky's $32M financial commitment to the Challenge represents the largest directed gift in the history of Clarkson University. The Solinsky Challenge will result in an $80M investment in engineering over seven-years, including an anticipated $48M expansion and renovation of the engineering building into the Solinsky Engineering Center and a portfolio of advanced manufacturing initiatives. New faculty will have the opportunity to engage with the Solinsky Engineering Leadership Challenge to advance innovation in sustainable manufacturing, materials design, and environmental systems engineering.
