Summary:
Fort Lupton Middle School is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and student-centered staff member to serve as the school's first Brain Bowl Sponsor . This is a new extracurricular academic program at Fort Lupton Middle School and will compete as part of the Junior Patriot League (JPL) . Brain Bowl is an academic quiz competition designed for students in grades 6�8 and is similar to Knowledge Bowl at the high school level. Students compete individually and as teams using their knowledge, quick recall, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Competitions may include a written or essay component followed by multiple rounds of team competition. During competition rounds, teams generally consist of four students who answer questions read aloud by a moderator using a buzzer system. Questions may cover a variety of academic and general-knowledge areas, including math, science, history/social studies, literature/language arts, geography, current events, fine arts, general knowledge, and other appropriate topics . The Brain Bowl Sponsor will be responsible for establishing and developing this new program, recruiting interested students, organizing regular practices, preparing students for competition, coordinating participation in Junior Patriot League events, and creating an inclusive environment where students can build academic confidence while representing Fort Lupton Middle School. Because this is a new program, the sponsor will have the opportunity to establish traditions, expectations, and a positive team culture while working collaboratively with other Junior Patriot League Brain Bowl sponsors and experienced programs.
Responsibilities:
Yearbook Production & Leadership Establish and develop the first Fort Lupton Middle School Brain Bowl program. Recruit and encourage students in grades 6�8 to participate in Brain Bowl. Create a welcoming program that encourages participation from students with a wide variety of academic interests, abilities, and backgrounds. Establish program expectations, practice routines, competition procedures, and team standards. Develop a positive team culture emphasizing academic achievement, teamwork, integrity, preparation, confidence, perseverance, and school pride. Educate students and families about Brain Bowl, competition formats, expectations, schedules, and participation opportunities. Work collaboratively with Fort Lupton Middle School administration and the District Athletic Director to establish and grow the program. Collaborate with other Junior Patriot League Brain Bowl sponsors to learn competition procedures, share resources, and develop the new Fort Lupton program. Encourage continued student participation and build a sustainable Brain Bowl program for future years. Student Recruitment & Team Development Recruit students who demonstrate interest in academics, trivia, current events, reading, mathematics, science, history, fine arts, and other areas of knowledge. Encourage participation from students who may not traditionally participate in athletics or other extracurricular programs. Provide opportunities for students to identify and develop individual areas of academic strength. Organize students into appropriate competition teams and practice groups. Develop team chemistry, communication, leadership, and collaboration. Prepare students to work effectively in four-person competition teams or other formats established by the Junior Patriot League. Help students develop confidence when answering questions in competitive settings. Provide constructive feedback and encouragement that promotes individual and team growth. Promote academic achievement, responsibility, attendance, preparation, and positive behavior. Practice & Academic Preparation Conduct Brain Bowl practices at least once per week during the competition season, with additional practices when appropriate and available. Develop organized and engaging practices using sample questions, practice competitions, written exercises, and buzzer drills. Prepare students across multiple content areas, including: Mathematics Science History and Social Studies Literature and Language Arts Geography Current Events Fine Arts General Knowledge Other categories used in Junior Patriot League competitions Help students identify areas of individual strength so the team develops balanced knowledge across multiple academic subjects. Teach strategies for quick recall, listening carefully to questions, recognizing key information, and responding accurately under time pressure. Teach proper buzzer technique, including when to answer, when to wait for the completion of a question, and how to avoid unnecessary incorrect responses. Teach students appropriate strategies for toss-up questions, bonus questions, and team-conference situations. Prepare students for written and/or essay portions of Brain Bowl competitions. Conduct mock competitions to familiarize students with competition procedures and reduce anxiety before league events. Incorporate current events and changing academic content into practices throughout the season. Communication & Collaboration Maintain professional and timely communication with students, parents, staff, school administration, and the yearbook vendor. Collaborate with teachers, coaches, club sponsors, and activity advisors to ensure comprehensive event coverage. Provide regular progress updates to the Principal and District Athletic Director. Promote school pride by highlighting student achievements, academics, athletics, fine arts, clubs, and extracurricular activities. Organization & Program Management Maintain an organized Brain Bowl calendar that includes practices, competitions, deadlines, and league events. Maintain accurate student rosters, attendance records, competition information, and other required program documentation. Coordinate registration and competition requirements with the District Athletic Director and Junior Patriot League. Maintain Brain Bowl equipment and materials, including buzzer systems, practice questions, competition materials, and other program resources. Develop and maintain a collection of practice questions and academic resources for continued program development. Assist with program budget needs and purchases in accordance with district financial procedures. Maintain organized digital and physical program resources that can be used to support future Brain Bowl teams. Safety & Supervision Maintain a safe, respectful, inclusive, and academically supportive environment for all participants. Provide appropriate supervision during practices, competitions, travel, and other Brain Bowl activities. Follow all Weld Re-8 School District policies regarding student supervision, transportation, communication, and student welfare. Promote appropriate behavior and good sportsmanship during practices and competitions. Ensure students treat teammates, competitors, moderators, officials, and host-school personnel respectfully. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with student participants. Represent Fort Lupton Middle School and Weld Re-8 School District professionally at all school and Junior Patriot League events.
Qualifications:
Certified/Licensed Teacher preferred. Experience working with middle school-aged students is preferred. Previous experience with Knowledge Bowl, Brain Bowl, Quiz Bowl, academic competitions, trivia competitions, or similar activities is preferred but not required . Interest in developing and leading a new academic extracurricular program. Broad academic knowledge and an enthusiasm for learning across multiple subject areas. Ability to motivate students and create an engaging, positive practice environment. Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and time-management skills. Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, families, and other Junior Patriot League sponsors. Comfortable using technology and learning electronic buzzer systems and competition equipment. Ability to organize students, schedules, transportation needs, competition materials, and program documentation. Willingness to learn Junior Patriot League Brain Bowl rules, procedures, scoring, and competition formats. Must complete all Weld Re-8 School District required training and background requirements. Additional Expectations Conduct regular after-school Brain Bowl practices throughout the competition season. Attend all scheduled Junior Patriot League Brain Bowl competitions. Be available for occasional evening or weekend competitions or activities when scheduled. Recruit and retain enough students to establish competitive Brain Bowl teams. Participate in Junior Patriot League Brain Bowl sponsor meetings, training, or organizational meetings as required. Work collaboratively with experienced Brain Bowl programs within the Junior Patriot League during the program's inaugural year. Assist with hosting Junior Patriot League Brain Bowl competitions at Fort Lupton Middle School when assigned. Continue developing personal knowledge of Brain Bowl rules, strategies, practice techniques, and competition procedures. Encourage students to expand their knowledge through reading, current events, academic study, practice questions, and independent learning. Promote Brain Bowl as an opportunity for students to develop academic confidence, teamwork, communication, quick recall, critical thinking, and school pride. Establish a strong foundation during the program's first year that can support the continued growth of Brain Bowl at Fort Lupton Middle School. Maintain a positive, professional, and collaborative relationship with students, families, staff, administration, Junior Patriot League schools, and community partners while representing Fort Lupton Middle School.
