Job Description

The Canon to the Ordinary serves as the primary clergy assistant and counselor to the Bishop, working to establish and maintain healthy and effective systems to carry out the vision and programs initiated by the Bishop and the lay and ordained leaders of the diocese.

As the Chief of Staff this person oversees, supports, leads and motivates both lay and ordained members of the Bishop's staff, holding them accountable and ensuring that operational goals are met, including through annual Goal Setting conversations.

The Canon to the Ordinary supports and collaborates with our Episcopal schools and a number of diocesan ministry groups, such as the Commission on Ministry, the Center for Christian Formation and Leadership, the Disciplinary Board, and the Commission for Hispanic Ministries to develop and execute operational strategies, monitor key performance indicators, and provide regular reports to the Bishop and other stakeholders. This person also provides resources for Mutual Ministry Reviews and works with the designated diocesan leaders in issues of misconduct and its prevention.

Other duties include: oversight of diocesan processes for leadership development; work with clergy, vestries, and school leaders especially in times of crisis; serving as a key contributor to the health of congregations in the diocese; facilitating Congregational Vitality programs (including the College for Congregational Development); and sponsoring annual Diocesan Vestry Trainings.
