Job Description

Position Vacancy Announcement:
Florida A&M University is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for the Assistant Director, Student Affairs vacancy. Requirements Under the supervision of the Director of Multipurpose Facilities, the Assistant Facilities professional staff member is responsible for the overall management, operation, maintenance, safety, and security of the Hansel Tookes Recreation Center. This position provides leadership for facility operations, preventative maintenance, risk management, capital improvement projects, and custodial services while ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and community members. The Director supervises facility personnel, oversees budgets, and ensures compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations. Direct the daily operation of the recreation center and all associated facilities; Develop and implement preventative maintenance schedules for building systems and equipment; Ensure all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, lighting, and life safety systems operate efficiently; Conduct routine facility inspections to identify maintenance needs and safety concerns; Coordinate repairs, renovations, and facility improvement projects; Maintain facility appearance and functionality to support recreational programming; Develop and administer facility safety policies and emergency response procedures. Ensure compliance with OSHA, fire safety, ADA, environmental health, and University regulations. Manage the inspection, maintenance, and documentation of emergency equipment, including AEDs, fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, emergency lighting, and evacuation systems; Investigate facility incidents and recommend corrective actions. Coordinate emergency preparedness drills and staff training; Prepare and manage annual operating and capital budgets. Monitor expenditures and approve purchases within established guidelines; Develop long-term replacement plans for facility equipment and infrastructure. Identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality service; Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules, inspections, warranties, and repairs. Oversee inventory of maintenance equipment, custodial supplies, and facility assets; Coordinate vendor services and monitor contractor performance; Ensure proper operation of fitness equipment in collaboration with equipment service providers; Supervise facilities staff, custodial personnel, maintenance technicians, and student employees; Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate staff performance; Promote professional development and ensure staff maintain required certifications; Maintain appropriate staffing levels for facility operations and special events; Coordinate facility setup and breakdown for University events, athletic competitions, tournaments, and special programs. Collaborate with recreation staff to ensure facilities support program needs; Monitor facility scheduling to maximize operational efficiency; Coordinate building access and key/card access systems; Monitor facility security systems and surveillance equipment; Collaborate with campus police regarding safety and security concerns; Ensure compliance with emergency building access procedures; Promote sustainable facility practices; Monitor utility usage and recommend conservation initiatives; Support campus sustainability goals through efficient facility operations. Provide exceptional customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors; Respond promptly to facility concerns and maintenance requests; Maintain positive working relationships with University departments and external partners; Maintain required records and documentation; Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in appropriate area of specialization and four years of related experience; or master's degree in appropriate area of specialization and two years of related experience. Competencies Strong organizational leadership, facility management, and project management skills; Ability to work independently and communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate employees and student workers; Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply applicable University policies, procedures, principles, and practices; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, vendors, and other stakeholders; Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and critical-thinking skills; and, Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage multiple projects, assignments, and, operational responsibilities simultaneously. Administrative and Professional and A&P Executive Service (A&P EX) positions are considered contractual. Terms and conditions are generally recognized by contract for a specific period of time or contracts renewed on an annual basis. Certain benefits, amount of leave, and notification of termination are exclusive to the pay plan. In accordance with Florida Statute 112.219, relevant work experience may substitute for the required education: 4 years of experience in lieu of a Bachelor's, or 6 years in lieu of a Master's. How to
