Position Duties & Responsibilities Key Responsibilities of this role are:
Governance, Leadership and Administration:
Provides strategic leadership and day-to-day administrative oversight for veterinary science programs (on campus and online), ensuring alignment with college mission, policies, and shared governance. Leads departmental and program meetings; coordinates committee work supporting academic quality and accreditation readiness. Organizes direct reports under his/her supervision to promote broad-based participation and equitable apportionment of program essential functions and initiatives. Represents the School of Veterinary Science at internal and external meetings; serves on campus-wide committees and cultivates productive partnerships/agreements with institutional offices and external stakeholders. Serves in the Dean's absence, as assigned by the Provost, and/or assumes program director coverage and/or teaching responsibilities when coverage is not available. Provides leadership in tasks and functions as identified by the dean.
Budget and Resource Oversight:
Assists the Dean in developing the annual Unit Plan and multi-year program initiatives, with attention to resource sufficiency and efficiency for curriculum delivery and clinical training. Supports budgeting processes; monitors expenditures; approves purchase orders and payroll as assigned; tracks variances and implements corrective actions as needed. Collaborates with the Dean on college foundation and grant opportunities to strengthen instructional, clinical, and student support capacity
Accreditation and Compliance:
Partners with appropriate campus offices and program personnel to ensure teaching and clinical environments are safe, appropriately equipped, and supportive of program needs, including biosecurity and animal welfare requirements. Oversees direct reports in ensuring all compliance reporting is appropriately prepared and submitted with college, regulatory, and accrediting offices/agencies. Participates with direct reports in facility and animal welfare inspections as appropriate. Participates in periodic space and equipment reviews; prioritizes instructional and clinical equipment requests to sustain educational quality and compliance. Ensures veterinary science programs engage in appropriate data collection/analysis to support accreditation reporting. Prepares annual accreditation reports. Prepares self-study documents and oversees site visit readiness processes in consultation with the Provost's Office.
Clinical Oversight:
Provides oversight to staff and faculty to ensure that programs provide adequate case exposure, species mix, and supervised clinical learning opportunities. Ensures the program has appropriate processes and procedures in place to monitor off-campus site agreements, quality assurance, and documentation.
Information Resources:
Collaborates with campus library and IT to support appropriate access to veterinary resources and instructional technologies.
Student Support:
Addresses student concerns as needed. Supports advising, retention, and progression initiatives. Ensures programs operate within college requirements concerning the protection and confidentiality of student records (i.e., FERPA). 7.
Admissions:
Collaborates with all applicable college offices to ensure admissions processes are transparent, clear, and equitable. Coordinates programs' participation in college Open House events, new student events, student orientations, and other recruitment efforts as needed.
Faculty and Staff:
Under the direction of the dean, supports the recruitment, onboarding, and mentorship efforts of new veterinary sciences full-time and adjunct faculty. Under the direction of the Dean, conducts classroom observations of full-time and adjunct faculty in alignment with the collective bargaining agreement and accreditation expectations and supports the professional development of faculty. Supports faculty scholarship as appropriate. Establishes appropriate work expectations and responsibilities for program staff in concert with staff workload expectations and all applicable collective bargaining agreements. Under the direction of the dean, generates faculty workload assignments each semester based on program needs, student learning needs, and in alignment with college and collective bargaining requirements. Curriculum, Program Assessment, and Course Scheduling Provides leadership and guidance to faculty in the development of curriculum, curriculum mapping, and curriculum delivery that aligns with accreditation requirements, student learning needs, and the college's strategic plan. Ensures that the regular assessment of veterinary science programs occurs and leads continuous improvement efforts based on assessment data Develops the course schedule for all veterinary science programs and collaborates with the dean on ensuring program required general education courses are accessible to veterinary science students. Ensures full-time faculty teaching loads, full-time faculty extra service, and adjunct assignments meet program needs and are assigned in concert with all applicable college, SUNY policies, and collective bargaining agreements. Oversees school secretary in the data entry of course schedules, workload contracts, and student registrations/de-registrations
Requirements:
Education/Licensure:
Unencumbered DVN license in the State of New York or acquisition of a NYS DVM license within six (6) months of hire; or, Ph. D. in Veterinary Science with an unencumbered New York State veterinary technician license or willingness to obtain a veterinary technician license within six (6) months of hire.
Experience:
Successful teaching experience Academic administrative experience
Skills:
Ability to relate fairly and objectively with all employees, students, and community members. Understanding of the various conceptual and methodological features of the initiatives offered within Academic Affairs, and a sense of how these initiatives are integrated in the pursuit of knowledge and in the promotion of learning Understanding of and ability to clearly communicate the aims and purposes of the academic initiatives Knowledge to effectively manage and lead a complex academic school with specialized labs Working knowledge of developing and administering a budget Ability to motivate staff to perform well, to improve, and to participate in divisional and college affairs Leadership abilities
Preferred Qualifications Education:
Certification in curriculum development and online learning technologies
Experience:
Work experience in overseeing or managing animal husbandry programs
