Job Summary The Lead Academic Advisor is a senior advising and supervisory professional responsible for leading an assigned team of academic advisors serving students across multiple colleges, schools, or academic programs. This position translates the RISE Developmental Advising Model, departmental Standards of Practice, and Academic Advisor Evaluation Rubric into clear team expectations; provides direct supervision, observation, coaching, performance evaluation, and professional development; and ensures consistent, evidence-based advising practice. The Lead Academic Advisor also serves as the primary Academic Success liaison to assigned academic units, supports complex student cases, monitors advising quality and workload, and leads continuous improvement efforts. Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks Provide direct supervision, coaching, performance management, and professional development for an assigned team of academic advisors serving multiple colleges, schools, or academic programs. Translate the RISE Developmental Advising Model, departmental Standards of Practice, and Academic Advisor Evaluation Rubric into clear role-appropriate expectations for relationship building, developmental coaching, student support, empowerment, documentation, collaboration, and professional growth. Establish performance expectations; conduct regular individual and team meetings; observe advising practice; review student experience, documentation, training, and administrative evidence; complete fair performance evaluations; and develop actionable coaching or improvement plans. Monitor the quality and timeliness of CIVITAS documentation, appointment preparation, action planning, referrals and follow-through, proactive outreach, professional communication, professional environments, and required training. Coordinate daily advising operations and monitor caseloads, workload distribution, appointment availability, outreach activity, and service demands to promote equitable, accessible, and effective student support. Serve as the primary Academic Success liaison to the leadership, faculty, and staff of assigned colleges or schools and coordinate communication regarding curriculum changes, policies, enrollment priorities, student concerns, and advising procedures. Collaborate with academic leaders and campus partners to develop coordinated strategies supporting enrollment, persistence, retention, progression, and timely degree completion. Model exemplary RISE advising and provide consultation on complex policies, curriculum requirements, student concerns, appeals, referrals, advocacy, academic planning, and degree-completion strategies. Serve as an escalation point for complex student cases and coach advisors in solution-focused problem solving, appropriate referrals, documented action planning, follow-through, and the promotion of student ownership. Coordinate advisor onboarding, RISE Advisor Academy participation, continuing professional development, reflective practice, succession planning, recruitment, interviewing, and hiring support. Use advising, enrollment, documentation, student experience, and student success data to monitor team effectiveness, identify trends, evaluate outcomes, calibrate ratings, and recommend evidence-informed improvements. Develop, implement, evaluate, and refine advising procedures, communication plans, workflows, and Standards of Practice to improve quality, consistency, accessibility, and accountability. Promote collaboration across advising teams and academic units; represent Academic Success on committees and task forces; and support organizational priorities and change initiatives. Maintain confidentiality, integrity, accountability, ethical decision-making, and timely, respectful communication while pursuing advanced professional development and leadership growth. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Education/Experience Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Three (3) years of progressively responsible academic advising or closely related student success experience. One (1) year of demonstrated leadership experience, which may include formal supervision, team leadership, project leadership, advisor mentoring, training, or coordination of significant advising or student success initiatives. Demonstrated mastery of academic advising competencies and successful application of developmental advising principles. Demonstrated ability to lead collaborative initiatives involving faculty, academic administrators, or cross-functional university partners. Successful completion of advanced advising, leadership, or supervisory professional development. May accept a combination of education and experience. Preferred Education/Experience Bachelor's degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Development, Counseling, Student Affairs, Communication, or another discipline emphasizing human development, learning, leadership, or helping professions. Five (5) years of progressively responsible academic advising or student success experience. Two (2) years of supervisory or leadership experience. Experience directly supervising professional staff and completing performance evaluations. Experience leading an advising team that supports more than one college, school, department, program, or student population. Experience serving as a liaison to deans, associate deans, department chairs, faculty, or other academic leaders. Experience managing advisor caseloads, staffing assignments, operational workflows, or service-delivery standards. Experience leading advising assessment, organizational improvement, strategic planning, or student success initiatives. Completion of advanced professional development or certifications through NACADA or another recognized higher education or leadership organization. Experience utilizing advising and student success data to inform decision-making, evaluate team performance, and implement continuous improvement. Demonstrated ability to supervise, observe, coach, evaluate, and develop professional staff using multiple evidence sources and role-appropriate performance expectations. Ability to apply and calibrate evaluation criteria consistently; provide specific, evidence-based feedback; recognize exemplary practice; and address developing or emerging performance through actionable plans. Ability to monitor and improve advising quality across relationship building, developmental coaching, academic support, student empowerment, documentation, workload management, collaboration, and professional growth. Ability to lead a team serving multiple colleges, schools, academic programs, and varied student populations while balancing institutional consistency with unit-specific needs. Strong knowledge of centralized advising operations, caseload and workload management, enrollment and retention strategies, and complex student case escalation. Ability to analyze advising, documentation, student experience, enrollment, and student success data and translate findings into coaching, assessment, and process improvement. Exceptional collaboration, communication, conflict-resolution, facilitation, and relationship-building skills with employees, students, deans, faculty, staff, and campus partners. Ability to develop training, procedures, workflows, communication plans, and continuous improvement initiatives. Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, accountability, and sound ethical and professional judgment.
