DEAN OF STUDENTS GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
Performs difficult professional work assisting the principal in the discipline of students. The Dean of Students is responsible for contacting the parents regarding discipline matters. This involves reviewing referrals from staff and acting upon behavior that warrants disciplinary action. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Principal. This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

Assesses and resolves all behavior problems that disrupt the learning process or the safety of students or staff. Confers with parents and students relating to behavioral adjustment and academic goals. Assists in the implementation of the school discipline plan. Assists with providing a safe and secure school environment. Assists administrators, teachers, bus drivers and bus aides to assure safe transportation to and from school. Assist with emergency situations when needed. Assists the principals/assistant principal in other areas as directed. Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have thorough knowledge of school law. (State and local). Must have leadership and management skills necessary to work with students, teachers, parents, and administrators. Strong oral and written communication skills; outstanding leadership and personal characteristics; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, parents, teachers, and students.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree and three years of teaching experience. Master's degree preferred. Administrative endorsement preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a Virginia Teaching License.
