Campus, ILLINOIS Summary A Classroom-Based Consultant (CBC) is a student employee with The Learning Commons who supports both students and instructors in a University Writing Program (UWP) course throughout the semester. CBCs use a relational, peer-to-peer approach to mentoring and collaborative learning. By attending each class, they work closely with the instructor to clarify course content and writing assignments, while also building supportive relationships with students. In this role, CBCs help writers strengthen their skills, better understand expectations, and successfully navigate both academic writing and the transition to college.Career Readiness Competencies:

Essential Functions Build relationships with students by establishing a peer-to-peer connection, fostering a welcoming environment, and engaging students proactively to encourage participation. Support the development of student writing and confidence by serving as a sympathetic reader, guiding writers through the writing process, and helping them recognize areas of strength and those for improvement while promoting revision and self-editing skills. Act as a writing resource by sharing strategies, modeling effective practices, and offering mini lessons on specific writing skills or processes. Promote learning and engagement by assisting students with understanding assignments, clarifying expectations, setting learning goals, and facilitating individual or group discussions. Model positive academic behaviors by demonstrating professionalism, punctuality, active classroom engagement, and effective study techniques such as note-taking, time management, and discussion skills. Serve as a mediator between students and instructors by clarifying assignment expectations, communicating feedback, and collaborating with faculty to identify trends and support classroom learning. Assist students in adjusting to college by sharing insights about university culture and expectations, discussing the rigor of coursework, and referring students to appropriate academic and campus resources. Connect students with The Learning Commons by explaining available services, encouraging frequent use of the Writing Hub, and making referrals to Academic Coaching, Subject Tutoring, and Math Tutoring. Minimum Qualifications Current undergraduate student in good academic standing. Strong writing and communication skills, demonstrated through coursework, writing samples, and/or faculty recommendation. Ability to build strong peer-to-peer relationships and support student learning. Willingness to learn and Writing Hub pedagogy and tutoring strategies. Comfort working with all students, writing styles, and academic disciplines. Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and other student consultants. Commitment to confidentiality and adherence to university policies; FERPA training is a requirement to work in The Learning Commons and as a CBC. Commitment to attend all class sessions of at least oneWRIT 1010/1110
course as assigned. Additional Information Must have at least one faculty recommendation. Applications MUST include resume, class schedule (Fall 2026), and two writing samples.
