  • AFT, Local 3571 Position Summary Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept The Department of World Languages and Literatures plays a central role in preparing the students of Portland State University to function in the global community.
Because we believe that language is central to that ability, we offer instruction in American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Modern Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Vietnamese. The Department is committed to teaching for proficiency. All of our language classes are designed to develop functional skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking for eventual use in a broad variety of real-world settings. Position Summary The German program offers both major and minor degrees as well as an MA degree in German, and focuses on effective articulation between language levels. Second-year German is a continuation of the first-year articulation process and also prepares students to continue with the third year. We invite applicants to join our part-time adjunct instructor pool to teach first
  • and/or second-year German courses during the year to meet the needs of the students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Teach first and/or second-year German using a proficiency-based approach in line with program-chosen pedagogical methods.
  • Maintain regular office hours for students.
  • Work with Section Head and contribute to program development Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree or equivalent in German
  • Two years of experience teaching second-year German at the college level
  • Native or near-native fluency in German and in English Preferred Qualifications
  • Study/work experience in a German-speaking country
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching German at the 1st-year (novice) level for a 100-level course assignment
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching German at the 2nd-year (intermediate) level for a 200-level course assignment Key Cultural Competencies
