Job Description

The Sacramento Public Library is the fourth largest library system in California, serving more than 1.4 million residents in the City and County of Sacramento, including the incorporated cities of Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Isleton, and Rancho Cordova. The system is a Joint Powers Authority, governed by a 15 member board comprised of elected officials from each of the member jurisdictions, with representation based on each jurisdiction's population. The Authority operates 28 libraries, including the Central Library in downtown Sacramento and has over 300 staff members, contains a collection of 1.5 million volumes and has an annual budget of $50 million. More than 700 thousand residents have library cards and 8 million items are circulated annually. The Library welcomes more than 4 million visitors annually. The students need to be comfortable with assisting the public with creative technology to join our makerspaces. Candidates do not have to be an expert in creative technology, but curiosity to explore new technology, the commitment to offer excellent customer service, and the ability to work on Saturdays are a must. These positions will start in May 2026. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Applicants will be required to pass required pre-employment checks to the satisfaction of University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI) and the hiring Agency or Department. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. 50 per hour Minimum Qualifications Availability to work Saturdays. Excellent customer service. Comfort with creative technology. Strong ability to provide concise, clear, and accurate verbal and written communication to a diverse public and staff. Strong ability to work independently. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow through. Demonstrated ability to use safe practices when working with creative technology. Experience giving instructions to others on how to use technology. Preferred Qualifications Knowledgeable about all creative technology offered in the library Makerspace. Knowledgeable about required safety when using creative technology. Experience using 3-D printers or Audio recording equipment. Experience with analog audiovisual media playback and digitizing equipment. Some experience using generative AI tools. Duties and Responsibilities Guide the public in the safe use of the creative technology provided. Regularly assess the Makerspace equipment for needs and updates. Identify issues relating to the equipment. Maintain Makerspace statistics. Assist with providing technology-related programs to the public of all ages. Engage with members of the public and staff to increase their knowledge of creative technology. Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation.
