Job Description

This is a full-time position located at the State Library in Baton Rouge, LA. This Library Specialists reports to the Reader Advisory Unit for the Talking Books and Braille Library (TBBL). This position serves as a reader advisor; circulates audio and large print books; composes and compiles articles for newsletters; keeps track of machine returns; verifies BARD applications; provides technical support to BARD patrons; reconciles CMLS transactions; and helps with TBBL outreach projects. This job duty is unique in that it provides specialized service to the blind, visually impaired, and physically handicapped as well as dyslexic. All Reader Advisors work closely together and support each other, answering incoming telephone calls in a rotating pattern and assisting patrons as needed. This position requires excellent communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to multitask. EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION
Every 15 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for six months of the required experience. The official job specifications for this role, as defined by the State Civil Service, can be found here .
Job Duties:
Provide personalized, one-on-one service to patrons, ensuring a high-quality customer experience. Utilize the Keystone Library Automation System (KLAS) to manage patron accounts, book orders, and service profiles. Process and customize book requests based on patron preferences, maintaining an active and accurate reading queue. Respond to statewide inquiries via telephone and other communication channels regarding books, equipment, and services. Maintain and update patron records, including contact information, service status, and request/reserve details. Administer and support BARD services, including application verification and providing technical assistance to users. Circulate library materials such as braille, large print, and specialized resources to patrons. Assist patrons in person by providing information about services and supporting their library needs. Contribute to library operations by preparing newsletters, facilitating book discussion groups, and supporting outreach events. Support team effectiveness through staff training, cross-training, and completion of additional duties as assigned.

This is a full-time probational appointment. Current permanent status employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time position that reports in-office. This position may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or overtime. This position may be required to travel and/or work overtime.
