Job Description

Come join Hennepin County Library (HCL) in our Library Services division. We are looking to fill multiple Library Specialist roles across the county. Library Specialists create a welcoming environment, provide excellent customer service, and handle all borrowed and returned material. They also assist patrons in obtaining a library card and using library technology and other resources. These positions require a large amount of physical activity throughout the shift and attention to detail. Serving public library patrons requires resiliency and the ability to adapt to change while providing equitable, trauma-informed customer service. Location and hours:

About these position types : These are full-time benefit earning positions. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of Hennepin County to apply for this position.
Note:
Limited duration employees are not eligible. These positions are internally classified as Office Specialist II. Click here to view the job classification specification. In these positions, you will: Provide excellent customer service in person and over the telephone. Assist patrons with checking out and returning materials, issuing new library cards, and resolving patron concerns regarding service and policies. Assist patrons with the use of library technology and resources, including library computers, printers, scanners, photocopiers, downloadable materials, and audiovisual equipment. Shelve books, DVDs, CDs, magazines, and other materials in their proper location. Unpack, sort, and organize library materials from daily deliveries and returns; in some buildings, this requires the use of an automated materials handling machine to move materials with conveyors and other electronic parts. Work collaboratively as a team. Understand and carry out instructions within a County level organization.
Need to have:
One of the following: Eighteen months of office clerical experience. One year of office clerical experience and completion of the Office Specialist Pathway Training program. Eighteen months or more of post-high school education. A combination of post-high school education and office clerical experience.
Ability to:
Be available for a combination of daytime, evening, and weekend work shifts. Bend to the floor, twist, and reach above one's head to put books on shelves. Lift, pack, unpack, and move boxes of library materials, and push book carts requiring up to 20 pounds of push force to move with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
A strong commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in their work and interactions. Experience Providing customer service in person and over the telephone in a public setting. Answering questions, resolving customer concerns, and/or explaining policies. Working with underrepresented or non-dominant culture communities, including people with limited English skills. Using technology and helping others use technology.
Ability to:
Take initiative and work independently with minimal direction from supervisors. Demonstrate flexibility and empathy as a customer service professional and a part of a library team. Adapt to change and be resilient. Proficiency in one or more languages. Candidates with proficiency in another language in addition to English are encouraged to apply. Bilingual candidates who pass a language assessment may qualify for additional bilingual pay and duties.
