SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Director of Collection Services, the Cataloging Assistant is a member of the Collection Services Department. Working collaboratively with the Director of Collection Services, the Cataloging Assistant edits copy and creates original catalog records for a variety of materials meeting local and national library standards . The Cataloging Assistant will possess a strong interest in learning about library Technical Services workflows and library cataloging resources and procedures. This position is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME Council 31.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Edits existing catalog records and creates some original records, primarily for books and atlases, in a variety of languages; Search library databases and the Newberry catalog for bibliographic and authority records; Verify and edit catalog records by applying current cataloging and description resources to meet local practices, consortium requirements, and national standards; Participates in collection management activities including creating inventories, accessioning and physical inspection of new materials, and deaccessioning tasks ; Participate in department meetings as appropriate; Maintains department goals for production and quality of cataloging output, and; Perform other tasks or activities as needed for the achievement of departmental goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; Experience navigating library catalogs/databases; Computer proficiency in Internet searching and in the Microsoft Windows environment; Ability to work independently with close attention to detail, accuracy, and production expectations, while understanding when to seek guidance; Ability to follow instruction and a facility for learning new concepts and skills; Effectively organize time and work on multiple projects; Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships; Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree and/or course work in a Library Science program, or course work towards a degree in the humanities. Library technical services department experience using OCLC Connexion and a cataloging module of an integrated library system (Ex-Libris Alma preferred) and applying national standards (RDA, AACR2, LC Classification LC Subject Headings, MARC21). Knowledge of at least one Western European language.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Physical strength, mobility, manual dexterity, and endurance required to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
SCHEDULE
This is a full-time, nonexempt position, working 35 hours per week, with normal hours generally from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. While remote work is possible, the incumbent will work primarily onsite.
