Job Description

Reference Assistant, Part-Time, Cumberland Public Library (Cumberland, RI) 1. Answers basic reference questions and provides reader's advisory to library patrons. Refers problem queries to the librarians. 2. Assists patrons by locating materials, faxing documents and offering interlibrary loans or placing system-wide holds for patrons. 3. Instructs individuals and groups, both formally and informally, in the use of the library's online databases, its on-line computer catalog, personal computers, basic reference tools, the Internet and e-mail usage. 4. Explains and enforces library rules and regulations. 5. Assists in the planning, preparation for and provision of educational, informational and recreational programs and services in the Reference Department. 6. Supervises and helps to train pages and volunteers assigned to the Reference Department. 7. Conducts bibliographic searches; prepares booklists and bibliographies. 8. Prepares and sends press releases, program flyers, lists, notices, and other correspondence, as needed. 9. Creates and maintains book display. 10. Serves as a federally certified Passport Agent. 11. Related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
1. Some knowledge of library practices, techniques and materials. Familiarity with books and literature. 2. Ability to identify specific patrons needs and match them with the appropriate resources. 3. Good keyboarding, spelling, shelving and filing skills. 4. Ability to communicate effectively and to maintain good working relationships with staff and public. 5. Willingness to learn and enforce library policies. 6. Ability to follow written and oral instruction and to work independently. 7. Ability to direct and guide others. 8. Experience with computers, computer equipment, computer programs and the Internet.
HOURS AND RATE OF PAY
This position is scheduled to work 24 hours a week. While some shifts may become standard, others will depend on the needs of the Reference Department in a given week. The ideal candidate will possess flexible availability. This position requires availability at least every other Saturday and some evenings. This person will be required to work at least one Sunday a month (from October to May) paid at time and one half the hourly rate. Position will be hired at $19.44/hr. Qualifications Bachelor's degree, or courses in Library Science or 2 years library experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
