Job Description

Shelvers ensure library collections are neat and orderly so that library customers can access them in an efficient manner. They also check in, re-shelve and retrieve library materials.
Typical Schedule:
Tuesday:
3:15 pm•4:45 pm
Thursday:
3:15 pm•5:15 pm
Saturday:
9:45 am•2:15 pm1. Maintain the order and neatness of collections throughout the Library a. Sort materials by call number prior to shelving b. Re-shelve library materials to the proper locations c. Ensure that materials are in the correct order on the shelves (Shelf Reading) d. Shift library materials on shelves as necessary e. Maintain attractiveness of the Library by picking up materials from seating areas, straightening shelves and filling displays f. Clean library materials as requested 2. Aid in checking in returned materials a. Empty book drops b. Check contents of materials to ensure all parts are returned prior to check in c. Reset security on returned items d. Check library materials in from customer accounts 3. Retrieve materials for staff and customers a. Search for and retrieve library materials as instructed b. Provide customers with basic directions regarding collections or refer to service desk as appropriate c. Assist customers in finding specific items on shelves d. Perform other related duties as needed or assigned
Education and Experience:
Completion of tenth grade or equivalent high school coursework; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be at least 16 years old. Sort efficiently in alphabetic or numeric order, and develop a working understanding of the methods for arranging library materials Re-shelve returned materials quickly and correctly, achieving an average rate of speed of at least 75 items re-shelved per hour and an average accuracy rate of 97% Represent the Library in a responsible, professional, and trustworthy manner Establish and maintain cooperative and courteous working relationships with staff and a diverse customer base Effectively use excellent customer service and communication skills when interacting with co-workers and customers Work independently with minimal supervision Appropriately multi-task and prioritize Work efficiently while paying close attention to detail Follow detailed verbal and written instructions Perform repetitive, routine procedures Meet the flexible scheduling needs of the Library Adapt to changes in the work environment Demonstrate basic computer skills, including keyboarding, word processing, and email Effectively use library and general office equipment, including but not limited to computer, printer, photocopier, and telephone
