Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit The mission of the Department of Mathematics is to extend the frontiers of mathematical knowledge and the ways it is used in the real world, to disseminate that knowledge and to train the next generation of teachers and researchers, as well as those choosing careers with industry or government. The Department is committed to building and nourishing interactions with other units across the UNC campus and with academic and industrial partners in North Carolina's Research Triangle region, throughout the State and across the Nation. The Department maintains a strong research program as well as a comprehensive educational program. An active, healthy research environment is essential for training graduate students and enlivens undergraduate teaching by bringing students into contact with new and relevant mathematics, fostering fundamental mathematical skills and appreciation, and encouraging students to become the next generation of researchers and educators. Position Summary The UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Mathematics invites applications for a tenured Distinguished Professor. The position will also carry a secondary appointment as department chair. The successful candidate will provide visionary academic and administrative leadership for the Department of Mathematics, helping to shape and advance its intellectual direction and strategic priorities. In the chair role, the candidate will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and university leadership to strengthen the Department's excellence in teaching, research, and service. Responsibilities will include leading and overseeing the Department, teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising graduate students, participating in academic service, and maintaining a strong, independent research program. The candidate must have scholarly achievement appropriate for a tenured appointment at the level of full professor. Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience Academic experience appropriate for appointment at the level of full professor, evidence of distinguished scholarship and excellence in teaching, and demonstrated leadership experience.
