The Substitute Physical Education (PE) Teacher provides physical education instruction and supervision across RISE campuses as needed. This position ensures continuity of the physical education program by implementing planned activities, promoting student participation and physical wellness, and maintaining a safe, structured, and positive environment. The Substitute PE Teacher works with students who may have diverse academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and physical needs and must be able to adapt activities accordingly. The position requires flexibility, strong student-management skills, and the ability to travel between assigned RISE campuses based on staffing needs. Qualifications Bachelor's degree preferred; minimum educational requirements consistent with Illinois substitute teaching requirements. Valid Illinois Substitute Teaching License, Professional Educator License, or other applicable state-required credential. Physical Education endorsement or previous experience teaching/coaching physical education, athletics, recreation, or fitness preferred. Previous experience working with school-aged children or adolescents preferred. Ability to safely lead and supervise physical activities in gymnasium, classroom, and outdoor settings. Strong student management, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to modify activities based on student needs, abilities, available space, equipment, and safety considerations. Ability to work effectively with students with diverse behavioral, social-emotional, and learning needs. Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between RISE campuses. Ability to maintain confidentiality, appropriate professional boundaries, and professionalism at all times. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Other duties may be assigned. Provide physical education instruction in the absence of the regular PE teacher or as assigned by building administration. Implement PE lesson plans, fitness activities, games, recreational activities, and other instructional activities provided by the regular teacher or administration. Provide clear instructions, demonstrations, rules, and expectations for physical activities. Promote physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, cooperation, and positive student participation. Maintain a safe, structured, inclusive, and engaging environment during all physical education activities. Actively supervise students during physical activities and monitor for unsafe behavior or conditions. Modify or adapt activities when appropriate to accommodate students' individual abilities, physical needs, behavioral needs, or other considerations. Manage student behavior in accordance with RISE policies, procedures, and established behavioral expectations. Use appropriate strategies to redirect students and support positive participation and engagement. Inspect activity areas and equipment for obvious safety concerns before student use and promptly report concerns to administration. Properly use, distribute, collect, and store PE equipment and instructional materials. Supervise students during transitions to and from physical education activities and during other assigned supervisory duties. Respond appropriately to student injuries, emergencies, or safety concerns and follow established RISE procedures for reporting incidents. Communicate professionally and collaboratively with administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, student support personnel, and other staff. Provide feedback to the regular teacher and/or building administration regarding activities completed, student participation, behavioral concerns, injuries, or other significant events. Travel between designated RISE campuses as assigned. Follow all South Cook and RISE policies, procedures, emergency protocols, and safety requirements. Complete required documentation or reports associated with substitute assignments, student incidents, or injuries. Physical Requirements:

Regularly required to stand, walk, move throughout a gymnasium, classroom, outdoor area, or other instructional space for extended periods. Must be able to actively supervise students participating in physical activities, games, exercise, and recreational activities. Frequently required to demonstrate or assist with physical education activities, which may involve walking, bending, reaching, stooping, kneeling, throwing, or other physical movements. Frequently required to use hands and arms to handle, carry, set up, and put away physical education equipment. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally , including PE equipment and supplies. Must have sufficient mobility to respond promptly to student safety concerns or emergencies within the instructional area. Regularly required to talk and hear in order to provide instruction, communicate expectations, and supervise students in environments that may have elevated noise levels. Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision, peripheral awareness, and the ability to visually monitor multiple students and activities simultaneously. Duties may include periods of sitting and computer use for attendance, communication, documentation, or other administrative responsibilities.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including gymnasiums, classrooms, hallways, multipurpose areas, and outdoor recreational spaces. The position may involve exposure to varying temperatures and weather conditions when activities are conducted outdoors. Noise levels may range from moderate to loud during physical education activities. The position requires active and continuous student supervision and the ability to respond appropriately to changing student behaviors and situations. The employee may work with students who require additional behavioral, social-emotional, or educational support. Duties require frequent interaction with students and staff and the ability to maintain professionalism in a fast-paced school environment. Travel between RISE Worth and RISE Chicago Heights may be required based on program and staffing needs. Work is generally performed during the regular school day and according to assigned substitute coverage needs.
