Position Summary
The Physical Education Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality physical education instruction that promotes physical fitness, healthy lifestyles, teamwork, sportsmanship, and lifelong wellness. The teacher will create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment while delivering instruction aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the goals of Macon County Schools.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Curriculum
Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging physical education lessons aligned with North Carolina standards.
Provide developmentally appropriate instruction in physical fitness, movement skills, individual and team activities, and healthy lifestyle practices.
Differentiate instruction and activities to meet the diverse abilities, needs, and developmental levels of students.
Assess student progress and maintain appropriate records of student performance.
Incorporate opportunities for students to develop teamwork, leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
Student Safety & Supervision
Establish and maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for physical activity.
Provide appropriate supervision of students during classes, activities, transitions, and other assigned duties.
Teach and consistently reinforce proper safety procedures, equipment use, and rules for physical activities.
Inspect facilities and equipment and report safety concerns or maintenance needs promptly.
Respond appropriately to student injuries, emergencies, and health-related concerns in accordance with school and district procedures.
Classroom & Behavior Management
Establish clear expectations for student behavior, participation, sportsmanship, and responsible use of equipment.
Maintain effective classroom and activity management procedures.
Promote respect, cooperation, inclusion, and positive interactions among students.
Encourage students to demonstrate personal responsibility and appropriate sportsmanship.
Student Development & Wellness
Promote the importance of regular physical activity, personal fitness, and lifelong wellness.
Encourage students of all ability and fitness levels to participate and experience success.
Foster positive attitudes toward physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices.
Support students in developing confidence, self-discipline, teamwork, and leadership skills.
Provide accommodations and modifications as appropriate for students with disabilities and individual learning needs.
Communication & Collaboration
Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, administrators, teachers, and other school personnel.
Collaborate with colleagues to support student achievement and overall school goals.
Participate in parent conferences, faculty meetings, professional learning, and school or district initiatives as required.
Work collaboratively with Exceptional Children staff, support personnel, and other educators to meet individual student needs.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain accurate attendance, grades, assessment data, and other required records.
Follow all Macon County Schools policies, procedures, and expectations.
Maintain required North Carolina educator licensure and participate in professional development activities.
Maintain confidentiality of student and personnel information.
Demonstrate professionalism, dependability, ethical conduct, and effective communication.
Perform assigned duties and other responsibilities necessary to support the effective operation of the school.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Current or eligible for North Carolina teaching licensure in Physical Education.
Knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and effective instructional practices.
Knowledge of age-appropriate physical education, fitness, and wellness practices.
Ability to establish positive relationships with students and maintain an effective learning environment.
Strong communication, organization, collaboration, and classroom management skills.
Ability to work effectively with students with varying physical abilities, learning needs, and backgrounds.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the physical duties associated with providing physical education instruction, including standing and moving for extended periods, demonstrating physical activities and exercises, supervising students in indoor and outdoor environments, and setting up or moving instructional equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position.
Work Environment
Work is performed in various school settings, including gymnasiums, classrooms, athletic areas, playgrounds, fields, and outdoor environments. The employee may be exposed to varying weather conditions while supervising or conducting outdoor activities.
