This document describes duties that the Academy expects of faculty members. These may change with each academic year, through discussions between you and your department head/dean/vice president. You will be reviewed and evaluated on the basis of how well you perform these duties. The responsibilities for this position will include some or all of the following: teaching, student advising, professional development, scholarship, service, and administrative responsibilities. Teaching is the fundamental responsibility of each faculty member; all faculty members are expected to participate in this activity. In addition, a high degree of "volunteerism/participation" is expected to facilitate the administrative support of the Academy along with effectively imparting your unique capabilities and expertise. This position is part of MMA's Advanced BIW Program in Shipbuilding, based at the Maritime Industrial Workforce Training Center. Students in this program are apprentices at Bath Iron Works (BIW) and earn an associate's degree in either Ship Design or Ship Production. The ideal candidate will teach courses with a focus on physics and engineering (Physics II, Static Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Material Properties & Testing). A background in teaching and/or working in these fields is preferred for this position. This is for a one-year term, starting on August 15, 2026. TEACHING
Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or training ship(s) and in immediate preparation for these; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing contemporary teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; supervising independent study projects, supervising or teaching clinical cooperatives or industry programs, and assigning grades according to existing Academy policy. ADVISING
Student advising includes time spent meeting with students regarding academic, curricular and career matters. SERVICE Academy service includes, but is not limited to, service on the Faculty Senate, Academy and departmental committees. Professional service implies the use of academic and professional expertise to serve your profession, the community, the state, the nation, or the world. SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarship enables individuals to remain current in the theory, practice, knowledge, skills and/or pedagogy of their disciplines. For some, scholarship and continued professional development may mean hands-on development and training in industry. The scholarly expectations of faculty should be consistent with the mission and purposes of Maine Maritime Academy. OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE
Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general reputation of all persons in the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public. DUTIES Teach undergraduate courses that are part of the Bath Iron Works Apprenticeship Program and MMA's Associate Degree Programs in Ship Design and Ship Production. These courses would include Physics II, Static Mechanics, Strength of Materials, and Material Properties & Testing. Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality curriculum in Maine Maritime's BIW Program in Ship Design & Ship Production Develop learning materials, prepare lesson plans, and maintain records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance Develop, administer, and mark exams and other assessments Provide advice and support to students Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, papers and exam Participate in departmental and faculty seminars aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department Contribute to departmental, faculty, or Academy-wide working groups or committees a requested Maintain one's own scholarship and continuing professional development Provide support of the Academy's training curriculum Help foster MMA's partnership with Bath Iron Works All faculty are expected to demonstrate their ongoing commitment to academic excellence; that is, to the conduct of possible research, publication, teaching and other forms of knowledge transfer, at the highest levels of achievement. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree (graduate degree preferred) from an accredited institution in a relevant field, such as physics, mechanical engineering, materials science, materials engineering, or naval architecture. Professional experience applying engineering principles to solve problems or design components or systems. Prior successful teaching/training/mentoring experience desired. Excellent communication and leadership skills Membership in relevant professional organization(s). Published research in refereed journals or technical articles in professional publications. Must meet Academy criteria for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Advanced degree(s) in engineering or physics Academic instructional experience Experience in the marine industry or equivalent military or industrial experience SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Work in the labs and in the shipyard may require: Climbing up and down ladders and gangways, lifting and carrying materials, occasional work in excess heat, cold, dampness or dry atmospheric conditions.
