The Lead Teacher is responsible for guiding the classroom team, maintaining licensing and safety standards, building strong relationships with children and families, and creating an environment that supports each child's growing independence. Key Responsibilities Classroom Leadership Create a warm, calm, nurturing classroom where children feel safe, connected, and supported. Lead the classroom team and help establish consistent expectations, routines, and responsibilities. Communicate clearly with assistants and provide direction throughout the day. Model professionalism, teamwork, patience, and respectful interactions. Communicate classroom needs or concerns with the Preschool Director. Montessori Environment & Child Development Prepare and maintain an organized, inviting Montessori environment appropriate for one-year-old children. Provide opportunities for movement, language development, practical life, sensory exploration, fine-motor development, and growing independence. Observe each child and adjust activities and support based on individual developmental needs. Encourage children to participate in simple self-care and classroom routines as they are developmentally ready. Protect children's opportunities for purposeful exploration and concentration. Use simple, respectful language and model Grace and Courtesy throughout the day. Social-Emotional Support & Guidance Build secure, trusting relationships with each child. Use empathy and connection before correction. Maintain calm, firm, and loving boundaries. Help children begin developing appropriate ways to communicate needs, frustration, and emotions. Support common toddler behaviors such as biting, hitting, grabbing, separation anxiety, and difficulty waiting or sharing using developmentally appropriate strategies. Redirect children positively rather than using punitive discipline or traditional time-outs. Work in partnership with the Director and families when a child needs additional behavioral or developmental support. Caregiving & Daily Routines Provide attentive supervision and responsive care throughout the entire day. Complete diapering and toileting routines according to licensing and sanitation requirements. Support safe and positive mealtimes, including helping children develop increasing independence. Maintain consistent and peaceful nap routines. Support children through transitions, including arrival, departure, meals, diapering, outdoor play, and rest. Maintain a clean and sanitary classroom environment. Health, Safety & Licensing Maintain required teacher-to-child ratios and active supervision at all times. Know the exact number of children in care and maintain accurate attendance. Follow all ADHS licensing, sanitation, diapering, sleep, playground, and classroom safety requirements. Complete required accident/incident documentation and immediately communicate safety concerns to administration. Maintain confidentiality regarding children, families, and staff. Follow all school emergency and safety procedures. Family Communication Build positive, professional relationships with families. Provide appropriate updates about children's days, development, routines, and successes. Communicate concerns professionally and partner with administration before addressing significant or sensitive concerns with families. Help families feel welcomed, respected, and confident in their child's care. Qualifications Experience working with infants or toddlers strongly preferred. Montessori experience or training preferred; willingness to learn and implement Montessori philosophy required. Ability to meet all Arizona childcare licensing requirements for the position. CPR/First Aid and required childcare certifications, or willingness to obtain them. Strong understanding of toddler development and developmentally appropriate expectations. Ability to remain patient, calm, and emotionally regulated during challenging moments. Reliable, professional, and able to work collaboratively as part of a classroom and school team. Must be comfortable with the physical responsibilities of toddler care, including sitting on the floor, bending, lifting children as appropriate, diapering, and assisting with daily care routines.
