Job Description

About the San Jose Conservation Corps (SJCC+CS): One of the first urban Conservation Corps in the country, the San Jose Conservation Corps + Charter School (SJCC+CS) was founded in 1987 to empower young adults aged 18 to 27 ("Corpsmembers") to upskill themselves and advance their career in conservation and green spaces. Today, SJCC+CS continues to operate its 1-year-long paid workforce development program, while also operating a WASC-accredited charter high school, allowing those who have aged out of the traditional education system to earn their high school diploma. Position Summary:
The science teacher will teach high school science courses that may include integrated science, life science/biology, physical science, environmental science and/or STEM. The teacher will be responsible for connecting academic content with contemporary issues, community projects and a youth development approach. The ideal candidate is an innovative educator who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves in a non-traditional setting to facilitate both academic and real-world skill-building, and someone who is comfortable managing a class of young adult students with diverse learning needs.
Job Duties:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. Develop supportive, positive relationships with young adult students. Ensure that the curriculum is academically rigorous, standards based, challenging and relevant to our young adults students. Implement developmentally appropriate curriculum, standards based lessons and instructional strategies to meet the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse adult students. Utilize creative resources for inquiry, hands-on activities, and project-based learning. Encourage critical thinking and student self-assessment. Consistently practice differentiation and scaffolding strategies and techniques across course offerings. Participate in staff meetings, parent meetings, and community events as part of the staff team. Collaborate with fellow charter school staff to support the academic, social-emotional, and personal development of students.
Ability To:
Build positive and supportive relationships with students, particularly adult learners. Apply current research and theory to established courses of instruction. Create and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment. Organize, set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility. Organize and maintain confidential student records and files. Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Use tact, discretion, courtesy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult individuals and situations. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with administration, faculty, staff, students, parents and others encountered in the course of work. Be comfortable with managing a class with diverse learning needs, from high academic performers to youth with academic gaps and/or special needs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Valid California Teaching Credential (preliminary or clear): Single Subject in a Science discipline (biology, chemistry, geosciences, or physics). Bachelor's Degree, including appropriate coursework in education or a related field. Ability to build positive relationships with a variety of constituencies including students, their families, teachers, staff and outside community members. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, particularly how to utilize a variety of conflict resolution strategies. Sensitivity to, and acceptance of, diverse cultures and individuals. Demonstrated ability to hold students to high standards and achieve measurable results. Demonstrated commitment to educational equity and alternative types of education. Preferred Qualifications Experience in non-traditional, youth development, and/or experiential learning settings helpful. Experience with educational assessment tools and methodologies. Experience and/or strong interest in youth development and working with young adults. Ability to work in a student friendly, collaborative, student centered environment. Ability to use authority, set boundaries, and hold high standards with students. Experience working with diverse groups, learners, and communities. Experience working with online learning platforms, such as Edgenuity, and online classroom management tools such as Google Classroom. Medical Verification :
California law requires school staff to show proof of being free from infectious tuberculosis (TB) before hire. Candidates must provide verification of a negative TB test or completed TB questionnaire within the past year, or a chest X‑ray if applicable. Proof of
COVID-19
vaccination is also required.
Background Check and Fingerprinting :
All candidates must complete Live Scan fingerprinting and pass a state and federal criminal background check. School employees are subject to additional background check requirements under AB2534 and SB848.
Drug Screen :
Candidates must undergo and successfully pass a pre‑employment 5‑panel drug test. •
SJCC+CS IS A MANDATORY COVID-19 VACCINATION EMPLOYER
•All new hires will be required to provide proof of vaccination absent an approved medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. If a new hire is in the process of being vaccinated, their start date may be adjusted to a future date after they have been vaccinated. Fully vaccinated means it has been at least two weeks since the person has completed the entire recommended initial series of a

vaccine.
Pay:
$71,400.00 - $98,644.00 per year
