Job Description

High School Chemistry Teacher Company Description - Hunter College High School is a highly selective public secondary school in New York City serving academically talented students. The school is known for its rigorous college-preparatory curriculum and strong emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, and intellectual curiosity. Faculty collaborate across disciplines to provide a challenging and supportive learning environment. Located in Manhattan, NY, the school offers access to rich cultural and academic resources. Hunter College High School is seeking a full-time 10th grade Chemistry Science teacher for the 2026-2027 school year. We are governed by the City University of New York, not the New York City Department of Education, and serve gifted students from all 5 boroughs. We offer a rigorous, non-Regents science curriculum that includes weekly lab sessions for all grades. Successful candidates should have experience teaching high school science at an advanced level and be proficient at differentiating instruction.

Role Description:
The High School Chemistry Teacher will design and deliver engaging, standards-aligned chemistry instruction to high school students in a full-time, on-site role located in Manhattan, NY. Responsibilities include planning and teaching chemistry courses, developing laboratory activities, and ensuring safe, effective use of lab equipment and materials. The teacher will assess student learning through assignments, projects, and exams, provide timely feedback, and maintain accurate records of student progress. Daily duties include collaborating with colleagues on curriculum alignment, participating in department and faculty meetings, and communicating regularly with students, families, and support staff. The role also involves offering extra help, advising or supporting student clubs or activities as appropriate, and contributing to the broader school community. Qualifications
  • Demonstrated teaching skills and classroom management experience in chemistry at the high school level, with a student-centered and inclusive approach.
  • Strong lesson planning and curriculum design skills, including the ability to integrate lab work, inquiry-based learning, and formative assessment.
  • Effective communication skills, including clear instructional delivery, constructive feedback, and professional collaboration with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Solid foundation in chemistry and familiarity with related disciplines such as physics to support interdisciplinary learning when appropriate.
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Science Education, or a closely related field; advanced degree and relevant teaching certification or licensure preferred.
  • Experience working with diverse learners and a commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
  • Comfort with education technology, learning management systems, and digital tools to support instruction and communication.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to school initiatives, committees, and co-curricular programs.
