PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Upward Bound is a federally funded college-preparation program created by the Higher Education Act of 1965 for high school students who are from low- income families and/or are potential first-generation college students. The goal of the program is to increase college graduation rates of eligible participants. This is accomplished by developing in participants the skills and motivation needed for success in post-secondary education. The Evergreen State College has hosted Upward Bound programs since 1977. Evergreen's Upward Bound Tacoma program supports students primarily from Mount Tahoma and Lincoln high schools from the Tacoma Public Schools district. In the school year, program staff are integrated into the schools offering weekly support and academic enrichment. During the summer, students participate in a 6-week summer program. The program includes classes, electives, recreation, mentorship, field trips, and community programming. For the first two weeks, the students commute to the Evergreen Tacoma campus for classes and electives. For the third week, students attend a camp to form healthy bonds and experience nature and environmental science. They also participate in an aviation camp, learn about aviation and STEM careers, including flying a real plane! For the final three weeks, the students reside in dormitories at the Evergreen Olympia campus and culminate their program together in a final showcase of their learning. Evergreen Upward Bound Tacoma is 100% fully funded by two federal TRIO Upward Bound grants: Upward Bound Classic ($530,919) & Upward Bound Math-Science ($297,601). The program is contingent on continued federal funding.
