Job Description

This position supports the mission and work of the Y by delivering safe, progressive gymnastics instruction for beginner-to-advanced recreational and pre-team athletes. Plans and leads classes across multiple events using USA Gymnastics progressions, provides appropriate spotting, mentors entry-level instructors, and partners with families to ensure an inclusive, goal-focused experience aligned with YMCA policies and standards.
Essential Functions:
Model the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with athletes, families, and staff. Plan and lead class segments across floor, bars, beam, and vault; teach progressions and provide safe, effective spotting within training guidelines. Assess readiness and advance participants appropriately; reinforce rules and safety expectations; prepare athletes for skills checks, showcases, and pre-team/meet experiences as assigned. Set up/break down equipment; complete routine equipment checks; maintain clean, organized, and safe training spaces. Communicate clearly with parents/guardians about progress, expectations, schedules, and opportunities. Support clinics/special events and help orient/coach Gymnastics Instructor 1 staff to ensure consistent teaching standards. Complete accurate attendance and incident/accident documentation as required. Follow YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols. One (1)+ year of recreational or pre-team coaching experience required; two (2)+ years and multi-event spotting proficiency preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of USA Gymnastics progressions, safety standards, and effective class management. Positive role model with strong communication and relationship-building skills; able to motivate diverse age/skill levels. Current CPR/AED/First Aid (or ability to obtain within Association timeframe). USAG Instructor Membership may be required based on assignment. Must meet Association and state/league requirements for background checks and required trainings. The Gymnastics Instructor
II & III
delivers intermediate to advanced gymnastics instruction in a safe, positive, and engaging environment. This role focuses on skill progression, proper form, technique, and participant development while adapting instruction to individual abilities. The instructor also assists with skill evaluations and meet preparation, as applicable, while helping participants build confidence, strength, coordination, and overall gymnastics proficiency.
