Job Summary
The Special Education Teacher for Moderate to Severe Disabilities (now often termed Extensive Support Needs or ESN) provides specialized instruction, case management, and behavioural intervention for elementary school students. This professional develops and executes customized curricula to accommodate severe cognitive, physical, emotional, and communication challenges, ensuring compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and California Education Code.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. Individualized Instruction & Curriculum Adaptation
Design and execute daily lesson plans aligned with California Common Core State Standards, significantly modified to meet student developmental levels.
Instruct students across multiple functioning levels utilizing assistive technologies, alternative communication systems (e.g., PECS, AAC devices), and sensory integration methods.
Foster a heavily structured, emotionally supportive classroom environment conducive to sensory regulations and positive behavioural growth.
Teach functional life skills, social-emotional learning (SEL), and foundational academics.
2. IEP Development & Case Management
Lead the drafting, monitoring, and compliance tracking of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
Formulate clear, measurable annual goals based on thorough assessments.
Facilitate and coordinate annual, triennial, and transitional IEP meetings with parents, multi-disciplinary teams, and administrators.
3. Behavioural Support & Intervention
Formulate, implement, and track Behaviour Intervention Plans (BIPs) for students requiring targeted behavioural modifications.
Employ district-approved crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies (e.g., CPI, Pro-ACT) to safely manage aggressive or dysregulated behaviour.
4. Collaboration & Team Leadership
Direct, train, and supervise classroom Paraeducators/Instructional Aides to implement instructional modifications and personal care routines seamlessly.
Coordinate services with Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs), Occupational Therapists (OTs), Physical Therapists (PTs), and School Psychologists.
Act as a direct liaison for families, delivering regular updates on student progress and training them on home-carryover strategies.
Job Qualifications & Requirements
Required Credentials & Certifications
Education Specialist Instruction Credential:
Must hold a valid California Moderate/Severe Disabilities or Extensive Support Needs (ESN) teaching credential. (Intern eligibility status considered by some districts).
English Learner Authorization:
Authorization to work with English Language Learners (e.g., CLAD, BCLAD, or equivalent embedded certification).
Education:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution (Master's in Special Education preferred)
Clearances & Legal Compliance
Clear California DOJ and FBI fingerprinting clearance (LiveScan).
Valid tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or clear test certificate dated within 60 days of hire.
Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, position, and transition students requiring physical assistance.
Sufficient stamina to maintain physical control during student crises and de-escalate safety risks.
