What they do
A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

October 1, 2026 The Special Education Academic Coach II is responsible for ensuring that students with diverse needs have access to our general education curriculum. Special Education Academic Coaches are essential to maintaining our low student-teacher ratio and ensuring all students get the individualized attention requisite for success.Requirements / Qualifications
EDUCATION
- High School diploma/GED and
- An Associate's degree (or higher) or
- 48 or more eligible units of coursework at a recognized college or university or
- Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal State or local academic assessment, knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading (or readiness), writing (or readiness), and mathematics (or readiness).
EXPERIENCE
- Experience in a school/learning environment preferred
- Experience with ABA strategies preferred and/or
- Experience with student medical needs preferred Requirements / Qualifications
