JOB SUMMARY
The Sewing Teacher provides instruction and demonstration of basic stitching, use of basic patterns for bags, cushion covers and clothing items, basic quilting techniques, means for mending damaged clothing and other alterations, basic machine use, and basic machine maintenance to learners with varying levels of experience and interest. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, the teacher facilitates flexible, project-based learning suited to each student's goals, pace, and attendance pattern. The teacher keeps sewing machines and equipment clean and in good repair, maintains organized classroom materials and tools, orders and accounts for supplies, and occasionally supports evening events at the site. Works closely with other HOH departments and volunteers.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides instruction and demonstration of basic stitching, use of basic patterns for bags, cushion covers and clothing items, means for mending damaged clothing and other alterations, basic machine use, basic machine maintenance, and basic quilting techniques. Facilitates flexible, self-directed sewing projects tailored to each student's individual goals, skill level, and pace, rather than a fixed lesson sequence. Assesses each student's skill level informally and guides project selection accordingly. Maintains a record of student attendance and registers students as needed. Ensures policies and procedures in the sewing program are followed. Orders and accounts for supplies for classes. Keeps sewing machines and equipment clean, neat, and orderly. Keeps classroom materials and tools organized and accounted for including processing fabric donations. Occasionally covers evening events or the front desk to fill in for absent staff, including unlocking/locking the building, registering and signing in attendees. Works with volunteers and groups to achieve the goals of the program. Acts as an ambassador for House of Hope; attends meetings and serves on committees as assigned. Provides support to fellow department team members, as well as outside departments, as needed. Attends training as requested. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred. Supervisory experience preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Bilingual English/Spanish required. Must have reliable transportation. Knowledge of classroom management. Ability to clean and service sewing machines. Ability to demonstrate time management and detail-oriented skills. Ability to explain ideas clearly and persuasively. Ability to organize, set priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work with volunteers. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion; maintain confidentiality of clients, co-workers and agency. Ability to relate well to individuals of all backgrounds and socio-economic levels. Ability to communicate effectively with clients, donors, volunteers, co-workers and board members, verbally and in writing. Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision. Ability to operate and use general office equipment. Ability to maintain clean, well-groomed appearance and dress appropriately for the position.
