Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Special Education Teacher Responsibilities:
Collaborate with a general education teacher or support staff to co-plan and co-deliver instruction in an inclusion classroom. Provide accommodations and instructional modifications to help students with disabilities access grade-level learning. Support students in participating in the general education curriculum with appropriate academic and behavioral scaffolds. Promote inclusive classroom practices that encourage peer interaction and a sense of belonging for all learners. Align instructional support to student needs so they can engage meaningfully alongside their general education peers.
Special Education Teacher Qualifications:
Special education teaching licensure or certification required where applicable. Experience supporting students with disabilities in an inclusion or co-taught classroom setting. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with general education teachers and classroom support staff. Strong skill in providing classroom-based accommodations and modifications tied to student needs. Ability to support students' access to the general education curriculum within a standard classroom environment.
