A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Job Summary We are expanding our team! Grand Traverse Academy is accepting applications for a K-12 special education teacher for the 2026-2027 school year.
Interested individuals should:
Hold a Bachelor's degree minimum Possess the appropriate Michigan Teaching Certification for the position Have knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of special education and specialty areas and be familiar with the principles and methodology of effectively teaching students with disabilities Have knowledge of school rules, regulations and procedures and the ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior Have a passion for building relationships with students and their families Be enthusiastic about their content area Have excellent oral and written communication skills Preferably have experience at all grade levels Responsibilities include: Planning curriculum and preparing lesson plans and other instructional materials to meet the individual needs of students, considering such factors as physical, emotional, and educational levels of development The successful candidate must also be able to relate positively with students and build strong relationships with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers and various other teaching professionals to develop individual educational plans for students. This is a full-time position which includes salary, health insurance contribution, paid time off and a 401(k) plan with employer contribution.
