A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Duties Provide individualized support to students with disabilities, including those with autism spectrum disorders and developmental disabilities, ensuring their safety and engagement in classroom activities Assist with classroom management and behavior support strategies tailored to each student's needs, promoting positive behavior and social skills Support curriculum implementation by helping with lesson planning, literacy education, math instruction, and early childhood activities such as toddler and preschool care Use communication skills, including American Sign Language when appropriate, to facilitate effective interactions between students and staff Aid in physical assistance for students requiring mobility or other physical support during daily routines and classroom activities Collaborate closely with teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, and other professionals to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that meet each student's specific goals Handle confidential information responsibly while maintaining a respectful and supportive environment for all students Experience Prior experience working with children in educational or childcare settings, especially in special education or private school environments and with autism Knowledge of childhood development principles, classroom management techniques, and behavior management strategies for students with behavioral disorders or special needs Familiarity with autism spectrum disorders support strategies and the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) guidelines for equitable education Experience working with individuals with disabilities or developmental delays, including familiarity with IEP processes and curriculum adaptation Strong communication skills for collaborating effectively with educators, parents, and other professionals Ability to handle confidential information discreetly while providing compassionate support to students Basic math skills and literacy knowledge to assist in instructional activities This paid position is ideal for motivated individuals passionate about fostering inclusive learning environments.
