JOB DESCRIPTION

: The Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing an instructional program designed to meet the individual academic, functional, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of students with disabilities, enabling access to the curriculum and participation in school and transition-related programs across preschool through post-secondary age levels.

TYPICAL DUTIES

: Develop, implement, and monitor instructional programs aligned with New York State standards and individualized student needs Design and deliver instruction in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) Develop, implement, and document IEP goals, accommodations, modifications, and progress monitoring Utilize instructional strategies that support academic, functional, and transition-related skill development, as appropriate to student age and program Establish and maintain classroom routines, behavior supports, and learning environments that promote student engagement and safety Collaborate with related service providers, mental health staff, and instructional support staff to address student needs Supervise and direct the work of paraprofessionals and classroom support staff Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, administrators, and team members regarding student progress and needs Participate in

CSE/CPSE

meetings, team meetings, faculty meetings, annual reviews, and other meetings as required Maintain accurate and timely records, including lesson plans, attendance, progress reports, and required documentation Support inclusion, community-based instruction, and transition activities, when applicable Perform other duties as assigned by Exceptional Children Administration

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills Familiarity with assistive technology and instructional supports, as appropriate

QUALIFICATIONS

:

Experience:

Prior experience working with students with disabilities preferred; experience across varied instructional levels and student needs preferred

Education:

Valid New York State Certification in Special Education (appropriate grade level, content area, Students with Disabilities certification)
