POSITION SUMMARY
The Machine Tool Technology Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality, industry-aligned Career and Technical Education instruction that prepares high school students for successful entry into postsecondary education, apprenticeships, industry credentials, and careers in advanced manufacturing and machining.
The instructor will provide classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction aligned with South Carolina Career and Technical Education Machine Tool Technology standards. Instruction will emphasize precision machining, measurement, blueprint interpretation, machine operation, CNC technology, safety, quality control, employability skills, and modern manufacturing practices.
The instructor will maintain a safe, organized, and industry-standard laboratory environment while developing strong partnerships with local employers, postsecondary institutions, advisory committee members, and other community stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction and Curriculum
Plan, prepare, and deliver rigorous classroom and laboratory instruction aligned with South Carolina CTE Machine Tool Technology course standards.
Provide instruction in areas such as:
Shop and laboratory safety
Precision measurement and inspection
Blueprint reading and technical drawings
Applied mathematics for machining
Layout procedures
Benchwork and hand tools
Drilling and related machining operations
Manual lathe operations
Milling machine operations
Grinding and finishing operations
Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining
CNC programming and setup
Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), when applicable
Machine setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
Quality assurance and quality control
Manufacturing processes and production practices
Integrate academic concepts in mathematics, science, engineering, and technology into authentic machining applications.
Develop lesson plans, demonstrations, laboratory activities, projects, and assessments that promote technical competency and problem-solving.
Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners.
Maintain appropriate instructional documentation, student records, grades, and assessment data.
Laboratory Safety, Equipment, and Inventory
Establish and consistently enforce industry-standard safety procedures.
Provide documented safety instruction and require students to demonstrate safety competency before operating machinery or equipment.
Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and professional machine shop environment.
Inspect machinery, tools, personal protective equipment, and safety systems regularly.
Maintain accurate inventories of equipment, tooling, materials, and consumable supplies.
Coordinate preventive maintenance and report equipment requiring repair or replacement.
Ensure students properly operate manual and CNC equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and established safety procedures.
Maintain required safety signage, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), emergency procedures, and related documentation.
Student Career and Employability Development
Integrate employability skills throughout instruction, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, professionalism, attendance, dependability, workplace ethics, and time management.
Prepare students for applicable industry-recognized credentials, including National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) credentials when appropriate.
Provide students with opportunities to develop professional portfolios, resumes, interviewing skills, and career plans.
Promote awareness of careers in machining, advanced manufacturing, CNC operations, tool and die, engineering technology, quality assurance, and related fields.
Encourage students to pursue postsecondary education, apprenticeships, military opportunities, and direct entry into the manufacturing workforce.
Work-Based Learning and Industry Partnerships
Collaborate with AIT's Work-Based Learning Coordinator to develop meaningful work-based learning opportunities, including job shadowing, industry tours, internships, apprenticeships, mentoring, and other workplace experiences.
Establish and maintain positive relationships with manufacturing employers and industry partners throughout Anderson County and the surrounding region.
Maintain an active program advisory committee composed of business, industry, postsecondary, and community representatives.
Use advisory committee and employer feedback to ensure the program remains responsive to current workforce expectations and technological advancements.
Collaborate with postsecondary partners to support articulation, dual enrollment, credentialing, and seamless transitions for students when available.
CTSO and Student Leadership
Support and participate in an appropriate Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO).
Encourage student participation in leadership development, technical competitions, community service, and career-readiness activities.
Prepare students for applicable regional, state, and national competitive events.
Professional Responsibilities
Maintain current knowledge of machining processes, CNC technology, advanced manufacturing, automation, industry software, equipment, and emerging technologies.
Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, school activities, and CTE-specific training.
Participate in required South Carolina educator evaluation and professional growth processes.
Collaborate with AIT instructors, administrators, counselors, sending schools, employers, and postsecondary partners.
Communicate effectively and professionally with students, parents/guardians, colleagues, administrators, and community partners.
Assist with student recruitment, program promotion, open houses, career fairs, advisory meetings, and other AIT events.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal, state, district, and AIT policies and procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director or designee.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates must meet or be eligible to meet South Carolina Department of Education certification requirements applicable to Machine Tool Technology.
For South Carolina CTE Work-Based Certification in Machine Tool Technology, current state requirements include:
High school diploma or GED as the minimum education requirement.
Demonstrated work experience as a machine tool technician.
A minimum of four years of qualifying industry work experience.
Ability to meet South Carolina Department of Education requirements for CTE Work-Based Certification.
Ability to obtain the applicable National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) state credential as required by the South Carolina Department of Education.
Successful completion of required background checks and other employment requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Associate's degree or higher in Machine Tool Technology, CNC Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Significant recent industry experience in precision machining or advanced manufacturing.
Experience operating and programming CNC mills and lathes.
Experience with CAD/CAM software and modern manufacturing technology.
Current NIMS or other recognized manufacturing credentials.
Experience with manual machining equipment, precision measuring instruments, and quality-control processes.
Previous teaching, training, mentoring, apprenticeship supervision, or industry instructional experience.
Experience working with high school-aged students.
Strong knowledge of OSHA-aligned safety practices and industrial safety procedures.
Experience working collaboratively with business and industry partners.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
Strong technical knowledge of machining and advanced manufacturing.
Proficiency with manual and CNC machining equipment.
Knowledge of precision measuring instruments, tolerances, tooling, speeds and feeds, and machining calculations.
Ability to interpret blueprints, technical drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing concepts, and manufacturing specifications.
Strong commitment to laboratory and workplace safety.
Ability to effectively demonstrate complex technical procedures to students.
Effective classroom and laboratory management skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to establish positive relationships with students from diverse backgrounds and ability levels.
Ability to collaborate effectively with educators, employers, parents, and community partners.
Commitment to preparing all students to become college and/or career ready.
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
The position requires the ability to work in both classroom and industrial laboratory environments. Duties may require prolonged standing; bending; reaching; lifting and moving instructional materials, tooling, and equipment; and working around operating machinery, metalworking equipment, lubricants, coolants, noise, and other conditions typically associated with a machine shop.
The employee must consistently follow established safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
CERTIFICATION EXPECTATIONS
Individuals entering through South Carolina's CTE Work-Based Certification pathway must satisfy all requirements established by the South Carolina Department of Education within the prescribed certification period, including required professional training, assessments, industry competency requirements, professional education coursework, and educator performance evaluations.
PROGRAM EXPECTATION
The Machine Tool Technology Instructor is expected to develop and maintain an exemplary CTE program that reflects current manufacturing industry practices and provides students with authentic, hands-on learning experiences. The instructor will support the mission of the Anderson Institute of Technology by preparing students with the technical knowledge, industry credentials, employability skills, and professional behaviors necessary to be college and/or career ready.
