What they do
A Special Education Teacher teaches students who have disabilities, and adapts teaching methods to meet the needs of students. Assesses students and helps to develop individualized education plans that specify the services and accommodations needed for each student. Works in a classroom that includes only students with IEPs, or works with students and teachers in regular classes. For students with severe disabilities, may focus on developing skills for independent living. Works as part of a team that includes therapists, school counselors or social workers.

Job Description

- Key Responsibilities
- 1. Develop, implement, and monitor
- Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- 2. Provide
- direct instruction
- tailored to students with disabilities in various settings (resource room, self-contained classroom, or inclusion setting) 3. Adapt and modify
- curriculum, lessons, and assessments
- to meet diverse learning needs 4.
Support students in developing:
5. Academic skills 6. Social and behavioral skills 7. Functional life skills 8. Monitor and document- student progress toward IEP goals
- 9. Conduct or contribute to
- student evaluations and reevaluations
- 10. Implement
- behavior intervention plans (BIPs)
- and positive behavior supports 11.
Collaborate with:
12. General education teachers 13. Paraprofessionals and aides 14. School psychologists 15. Speech, occupational, and physical therapists 16. Parents/guardians 17. Maintain compliance with- IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)
- and state regulations 18. Participate in
- IEP meetings, staff meetings, and professional development
- 19. Manage classroom behavior and maintain a safe, structured learning environment
- Required Qualifications
- 1. Bachelor's degree in
- Special Education
- or related field 2. Valid
- Wisconsin Special Education teaching license
- (or eligibility) 3. Knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and instructional strategies 4. Ability to work with diverse student populations with varying disabilities
- Preferred Qualifications
- 1. Experience teaching in a
- special education or inclusive classroom setting
- 2. Strong classroom management and behavior support skills 3. Experience with assistive technology and differentiated instruction 4. Strong collaboration and communication abilities
- Working Conditions
- 1. School-based environment (classrooms, resource rooms, and specialized programs) 2. Work with students across
- various grade levels and ability levels
- 3. Requires standing, walking, and active engagement throughout the school day 4. May supervise paraprofessionals or aides 5. Possible assignment across multiple classrooms or schools
