Job Description

The job of teacher, Center for Juvenile Detention Services, is done for the purpose of planning course instruction, selecting instructional materials, providing one-on-one and group instruction as needed, maintaining records of student progress, and managing classroom behavior in one or more of the following areas: language arts, math, history, science, and life/job skills. This position will start approximately October 5, 2026 and end approximately January 22, 2027 (60 work days). The salary is $175 per day but will move to certificated salary schedule after 20 consecutive days of work. Instructs students individually or in groups for the purpose of optimizing development of each student and helping to enhance their academic skills. Assess students' educational strengths and weaknesses for the purpose of documenting progress and developing individualized curricula. Prepares teaching materials for the purpose of adapting lessons to meet the individual needs of students. Develops course outlines and daily lesson plans for the purpose of selecting appropriate curriculum materials to address individual learning styles. Maintains security measures within the classroom for the purpose of complying with detention center policies and enforcing safety rules. Manages classroom behavior of students for the purpose of utilizing behavior modifications and established discipline rules. Monitors students for the purpose of evaluating their behavior daily and enforcing security and safety rules. Models respect, responsibility, and accountability for the purpose of demonstrating positive behavior for students. Participates in activities that promote professional development for the purpose of using clinical and educational research to enhance services. Works as a member of a team for the purpose of providing consistency throughout the classroom setting with respect to the management of student behavior. Performs related duties as assigned. Related duties may not specifically be listed but are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's classification of work. SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include : adhering to safety practices, operating standard office equipment using pertinent software applications, planning and managing projects, and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE

is required to perform algebra and/or geometry, read technical information, compose a variety of documents, facilitate group discussions, and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes : concepts of grammar and punctuation, stages of child development, conflict resolution methods, and safety practices and procedures. ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events, gather, collate, and classify data, and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances, analyze data utilizing defined but different processes, and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and groups, work with data of varied types and purposes, and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives, and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include : communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules, working with incarcerated youth, working as part of a team, promoting a positive learning environment, and having regular and reliable attendance. Responsibility Responsibilities include working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives, directing other persons within a small work unit, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the agency's services. Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 35% sitting, 15% walking, and 50% standing. This job is performed in a generally hazard-free environment. Experience Job-related experience within specialized field is preferred. Experience teaching mathematics preferred. Education Bachelor's degree in job-related area required. Certificates & Licenses Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement (preferably at the secondary level). Mathematics endorsement preferred.
