Essential Job Functions:

• Provides assistance to teachers in specialized and/or general education classrooms in preparing a variety of instructional material for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts with students.
• Provide instructional support to individual students and small groups with special learning needs by reinforcing learning activities, assisting with the preparation of instructional materials and learning media and monitoring student progress to support remediation of identified learning needs.
• Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g. diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, seizures, etc.) for the purpose of meeting immediate health care needs and/or developing student's daily living activities and behavioral skills.
• Support student behavior management through the implementation of positive reinforcement strategies and behavior intervention techniques designed to encourage appropriate and productive student behaviors.
• Provides prompt and appropriate assistance to students experiencing toileting accidents or limited control of bodily functions, ensuring dignity, hygiene, and safety at all times.
• Maintain, or assist in maintaining, a safe, orderly, and welcoming learning environment that promotes engagement and positivity.
• Assist service providers in the implementation of prescribed instructional, training, and therapy programs for students with physical disabilities, which may include limb manipulation, body movement, and stretching.
• Monitors and assists students for the purpose of practicing and/or reinforcing learning, remediation, and health concepts and assisting students in progressing through and reaching IEP/BP goals.
• Provides assistance to students with extensive support needs for the purpose of reinforcing, developing and maintaining proper behavior, ensuring safety for students, and ensuring that program operations are in compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Implements strategies/plans for alternative communication with nonverbal students for the purpose of connecting devices and communicating with students with special needs.
• Assist students with braces, wheelchairs, mechanical apparatus including special medical equipment.
• Adhere to established safety methods, techniques and procedures for lifting and moving students incapable of providing assistance.
• Monitors all students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
• Collect and maintain accurate student data including academic and behavior information and ensure all student records and information are handled in accordance with FERPA and established confidentiality standards.
• Recognize and respond to seizures or respiratory difficulties in accordance with established procedures, training and district protocols.
• Perform CPR/First aid.
• Request appropriate assistance for serious student injury or illness.
• May assist in the development of communication skills with students.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Escorts all students to/from bus and/or transportation vehicles as needed for the purpose of ensuring the safety of individuals and proper boarding and unboarding practices in accordance with established policies and procedures.
• May ride the bus with students.
• Attend and participate in training, staff meetings and professional developmental activities to support effective performance of assigned duties.
• Perform other job related duties as assigned.
