Supports the coordination and management of the activities of the Senior Center. Performs highly skilled administrative and clerical duties to ensure effective and efficient operations. The Program Assistant is recommended by the COA in coordination with the Council on Aging Director and appointed by the Board of Selectmen. The Program Assistant works under the general supervision and direction of the Council on Aging Director.
- Frequent interruptions to assist patrons and variable workload.
- Provides administrative and clerical support to the Council on Aging Director, including word and data processing, filing, copying, scanning, and handling correspondence.
- Interacts with members of the general public: seniors, healthcare providers, federal, state, and/or local government officials, and Town Employees.
- Coordinates and assists with projects relating to Department operations and other areas.
- Maintains records such as program participation and volunteer time records.
- Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls, providing information and handling issues that may require sensitivity and use of sound independent judgment, or refers to appropriate individual(s).
- Assist patrons with filing applications for assistance programs.
- Research and schedule educational programs at the Senior Center.
- Attend MCOA Trainings.
- Performs similar or related work as required or assigned by the Council on Aging Director.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.

- Reliability and professional personal presentation essential.
- Operates standard office equipment, including a computer.
- Proficiency in typing, basic word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software (such as MS Word and Excel).
- High School diploma or G.E.D. required; Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in relevant field (i.e., Public Administration, Business, etc.) preferred
- 2 years progressively responsible experience in a relevant position (i.e., human services, working with the elderly, etc.).
- Possess a valid Driver's license
- CPR/AED First Aid Certification Preferred
- CORI Check
- Basic knowledge of various programs and services that are offered to the Senior population.
- Be able to communicate with the senior population with empathy, tactfulness, and respect.
- Be able to prioritize tasks and work independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills, as well as a strong interest in working with the elderly population.
- Excellent oral and written skills.
- Proficient in computer skills.

North Brookfield Senior Center, 29 Forest Street This is an office-based job in a dynamic Senior Center. While performing the duties of the Program Assistant, the employee is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, volunteers, and//or third parties transacting business with The Town of North Brookfield, and move throughout the municipal office. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
