Summary The Department of Engineering Fundamentals at Michigan Technological University is searching for qualified candidates to inspire the next generation of engineering students by implementing dynamic problems and project-based education in our integrated first year engineering program. We invite applications for one or more faculty positions in Engineering Fundamentals. The department houses the Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree program, teaches the common first year engineering courses, and supports engineering education research. We approach teaching in cutting edge ways, using a flipped format with an active and collaborative learning environment and supported by trained near-peer mentor assistants. Responsibilities and Essential Duties Anticipated teaching needs include first-year engineering classes, with opportunities to teach other advanced courses in general engineering. Typical first-year topics include engineering problem solving, engineering design, computer programming, and solid modeling. First-year courses are taught in a flipped class format emphasizing active and collaborative learning. Although the primary duty will be teaching, there is an expectation of collaboration on STEM-education research and service. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work and actively engage in university continuous improvement initiatives. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. Required Education, Certifications, Licensures Qualifications include a master's degree in engineering (Ph.D. preferred), STEM Education, or related field. Comparable credentials, such as a PE license will also be considered. Required Experience Prior teaching experience in active learning environments. Desirable Education and/or Experience
  • Previous teaching or curricular experience with first-year engineering students
  • Terminal degree in engineering, a related STEM field, or STEM education
  • Research in engineering education or a field that supports engagement of undergraduate engineering students
  • Ability to engage students in design challenges that incorporate the local environment and community resources
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly MATLAB or other programming languages
  • 3-D modeling and CAD software skills
  • Experience in engineering design
  • Experience with microcontrollers, data acquisition and controls Required Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Other qualifications include:
