Student Support and Attendance Paraprofessional

REPORTS TO
Principal SUMMARY:

The Student Support and Attendance Paraprofessional assists school staff in supporting students' academic engagement, school attendance, and overall success. The paraprofessional works with individual students and small groups to provide encouragement, guidance, and support; assists with attendance-related interventions; and communicates with parents/guardians under the direction of school administration and appropriate staff. The position supports efforts to identify and address barriers to regular school attendance and helps connect students and families with appropriate school resources and supports.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

Assists students individually or in small groups with academic, behavioral, social-emotional, organizational, and school-engagement needs under the direction of certified staff or school administration. Provides encouragement, mentoring, and positive support to students to promote regular attendance, engagement, and successful participation in school. Monitors and follows up with students who have attendance concerns, including excessive absences, tardies, early dismissals, or patterns of disengagement. Makes telephone calls and other approved communications to parents/guardians regarding student attendance, school engagement, and available supports under the direction of the principal or designee. Maintains professional, respectful, and culturally responsive communication with students, parents/guardians, and school staff. Documents parent/guardian contacts, student contacts, attendance interventions, and follow-up activities in accordance with district procedures. Assists school staff in identifying barriers that may be affecting a student's regular attendance and communicates concerns to the appropriate school personnel. Helps connect students and families with school-based resources, services, and personnel that may assist in addressing attendance or student support needs. Participates in attendance intervention activities, student support meetings, conferences, and other activities as directed by the principal or designee. Follows up with students and families after attendance interventions to monitor progress and encourage continued improvement. Collaborates with teachers, counselors, social workers, administrators, attendance personnel, and other appropriate staff regarding student needs and supports. Assists students in developing organizational, time-management, school-readiness, and self-advocacy skills that support successful school participation. Provides supervision and support to students in assigned settings and during designated school activities. Assists with welcoming and re-engaging students who have been absent from school. Supports school wide efforts to promote positive attendance, student engagement, and a welcoming school environment. Maintains confidentiality of student and family information in accordance with district policies and applicable laws and regulations. Performs clerical, recordkeeping, and organizational duties related to student support and attendance as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Vocational Preparation:

(Experience) Experience working with children or adolescents in an educational, community, youth-service, or related setting preferred. Experience communicating with students and families preferred. Experience supporting students with attendance, engagement, behavioral, academic, or social-emotional needs preferred. Ability to establish positive and appropriate relationships with students and families. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling sensitive student and family information. Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, and respectfully with students, parents/guardians, and school staff. Ability to work effectively as a member of a school-based team. Ability to maintain accurate records and documentation. Ability to demonstrate patience, empathy, cultural responsiveness, and professionalism when working with students and families. Ability to recognize student needs and appropriately communicate concerns to the designated school personnel.

Education Preparation:

(Formal and Informal) High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree or higher preferred. Relevant education, training, or experience in education, human services, social services, child development, or a related field preferred.
