Educational Assistant SPED (163 Day Contract) Portales Municipal Schools seeks a Special Education Educational Assistant to provide classroom, instructional, behavioral, personal care, and student-specific support to students with disabilities under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel. The position may serve as a classroom-based SPED Educational Assistant supporting multiple students or may be assigned as a one-on-one Educational Assistant to a student requiring intensive academic, behavioral, physical, developmental, medical, communication, mobility, safety, or personal-care support. Assignments may include supporting students with significant and/or complex needs and may require close supervision, one-on-one behavioral support, assistance with activities of daily living, mobility assistance, and implementation of student-specific health, safety, behavioral, or educational plans.
Licensure Requirement:
NMPED Level III Educational Assistant License This position is open until filled.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Provide classroom, instructional, and student support under the direction of licensed personnel, including individual and small-group assistance.
2. May provide one-on-one support to an individual student requiring additional academic, behavioral, developmental, physical, medical, communication, mobility, or safety assistance.
3. When assigned one-on-one, may follow and support the student throughout the school day in classrooms, common areas, playgrounds, lunch, transitions, and other school settings.
4. May provide one-on-one behavioral support, including prompting, redirection, reinforcement, de-escalation, supervision, and approved behavioral strategies.
5. May assist students with significant physical, developmental, or medical needs according to student-specific plans and appropriate training.
6. May provide personal care and activities of daily living, including toileting, diapering, hygiene, feeding, changing clothing, positioning, mobility, and transfers, when assigned and appropriately trained.
7. May assist with health, safety, emergency, communication, adaptive, mobility, and medical procedures, including wheelchair use and transfers, as directed and trained.
8. Assist students with classroom assignments, reading, mathematics, independent work, enrichment, remedial activities, and other instruction established by the teacher.
9. Reinforce teacher-directed instruction and assist students in developing academic, social, communication, emotional, behavioral, and independent-living skills.
10. Support students during arrival, dismissal, recess, lunch, transitions, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities.
11. Observe and report student progress, behavior, concerns, and changes in academic, developmental, physical, medical, or emotional condition.
12. Follow student-specific educational, behavioral, medical, safety, communication, mobility, and personal-care plans as directed.
13. Maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA, District policies, safety procedures, and the direction of licensed personnel.
14. Use instructional, communication, adaptive, mobility, medical, and other equipment or technology as directed and trained.
15. Maintain a safe, supportive, respectful, and orderly learning environment.
16. Demonstrate patience, flexibility, sound judgment, professionalism, and appropriate responses to students with significant or complex needs.
17. Participate in required professional development, staff meetings, and student-specific training.
18. Communicate effectively with teachers, administrators, families, related-service providers, and other members of the educational team.
19. Perform other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, principal, and/or superintendent, including transfer to another district campus or work location as needed.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Assist teachers with classroom preparation, organization, instructional materials, and activities.
2. Assist individual students and small groups with teacher-directed activities, independent work, enrichment, and remedial instruction.
3. Assist students in general education and other school settings as directed.
4. Assist with student supervision during recess, lunch, arrival, dismissal, transportation loading/unloading, and other activities.
5. Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe classroom and report unsafe conditions.
6. Assist with routine classroom or clerical tasks related to instruction.
7. Model appropriate social, communication, behavioral, and interpersonal skills.
8. Work cooperatively with teachers, special education staff, administrators, families, and other school personnel.
9. Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and required training.
Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma/GED (Associate's Degree or above desirable.)
2. Must hold or qualify for a New Mexico Level III Educational Assistant license (minimum of associate degree or appropriate college credits or obtain a passing score on the Educational Assistant's assessment)
3. Demonstrated aptitude for the work to be performed.
4. Additional education and/or experience is desirable.
Physical Requirements:
Sitting, standing, lifting, and carrying (up to 50 lbs), reaching, squatting, kneeling, and moving light furniture may be required.
Safety/Health and Other Requirements:
1. Must follow universal hygiene and safety precautions and may be required to work with bodily fluids and students requiring medical, behavioral, physical, developmental, or personal care support.
2. An FBI fingerprint background check will be conducted on all new hires of the Portales Municipal Schools. Continued employment will be contingent upon the results of the background check.
Equipment/Material Handled:
Must have the knowledge and ability to operate all multimedia equipment, including current technology.
Work Environment:
Must work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After-hours work may be required. Portales Municipal Schools are located in the City of Portales, which has a population of about 15,000. The area's economy is based primarily on agriculture. Portales is the home of Eastern New Mexico University and is less than 20 miles from Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis, NM. The Portales Municipal School District consists of six grade-level schools. This means that each school, except the high school, consists of two grade levels and is not community-based. Portales High School houses grades 9-12, while Brown Early Childhood Center is grades PK-K; James Elementary is 1st and 2nd grade; Valencia Elementary consists of grades 3rd and 4th; Lindsey/Steiner Elementary is grades 5th and 6th; and Portales Junior High is the home of 7th and 8th-grade students.
